your mixes are better than mine, but in case you haven't discovered some of this stuff yet:

Haven't read the whole thing yet, but the first bit about velocity switching is muy helpful. I've been doubling legato/staccato patches for most of the big instruments, and this should help clear that up.

if it's a VST, i used philharmonik. |
Chorium is a free soundfont with some great orchestral patches (especially strings and choir). I used it until I got Philharmonik on an impulse buy a few days ago (it was on sale for $60 and Jani Liimatainen says he loves it). And if Philharmonik works for you too, I'm kind of glad I didn't get EastWest.

Yeah, man! We went on before Metsatoll. God damn, that was such a fun show. I'm totally hooked on Tyr now.

i see you're an engineer as well, high five! i just finished college, working in software now.
good luck with the band, and do let me know when you post more songs! |
What did you get your degree in?
Also, if you're interested, I do need some feedback on some songs we're working on. There are some disagreements within the band on the direction of the album so I might just take you up on your offer. I need someone in the genre to be able to look at it from the outside.

I mostly play metal, but I want to try not limiting myself when I can.
Here's my latest musical find, it's black metal/prog rock/etc.:

Are you really busy this semester? |
Nice. I'm still looking for summer work so I can hang around in the Bay. I dig the tune. Reminds me a little of Opeth's newest album (which is incredible, if you haven't heard it). I'm not too buys. Have a little more normal course load, and only 4 more weeks of class.

i didn't know you were so into music/songwriting - perhaps we should jam/collaborate some time! |
Nice man, where are you working? I'm always down to jam. Mostly play rock and funk. Just discovering what I can do with prog rock writing, and having a lot of fun there. You?

i just checked out your portfolio thing, awesome stuff! especially the 3d modeling. is that what you're going to school for?
a few semesters ago, i took a class where i made a 3d short with some classmates, just thought i'd show you. i think the animation is shit, but it was my first go at composing a soundtrack for anything!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoFtB_0xYFk |
I thought the animation was pretty decent and it had a good plot. The music fit it as well. But Nah, I go to school for general graphic design and 3D modeling/Animation is a side thing. That would cost way to much money to major in. XD

i've heard of Catamenia, but it was back when i couldn't make sense of black metal and i didn't make anything of them. i like your list of favorites though! |
Really, I don't know how collabs work, but it looks like you're into the same stuff, so that might work out (and that "black metal sketch" sounds great).
Thanks for the bit about my faves.

kcorkcar wrote on Mar 25th, 2011 4:48amvIsIbleNoIsE wrote on Mar 23rd, 2011 at 11:17pm : sweet! show me when you have something put together!
i've been really into Emperor lately, and so the song i'm working on right now is influenced by them. i've also been getting into weird, atonal orchestra stuff like penderecki and bartok and the bioshock soundtrack - i think it'd fit black and/or death metal really well, so i'm trying to see if i can emulate that sound on a vst! |
Hopefully I'll have a final mix down by the end of this weekend. While I'm not into emperor, I do know what you mean by taking the sound of a orchestral and kinda recreating it. I'm actually working on doing something like that for Majoras Mask. XD
