Favorite bands :
Built to Spill, Jimi Hendrix, The Velvet Underground, Minor Threat, Converge, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Melvins, Willie Nelson, Burning Spear, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Jawbreaker, The Stooges, The Rolling Stones (especially when Brian Jones was still alive), Hot Water Music, Rites of Spring, A Tribe Called Quest, The Smiths, Circle Jerks, Cap'n Jazz, Fugazi, The Lawrence Arms, Pavement, Black Flag, Michael Jackson, Descendents, Sunny Day Real Estate, Aesop Rock, Joy Division, and a lot of other stuff. I also listen to a fuckload of metal, but I really wouldn't count many metal bands among my favorites because most metal bands seem to release like two good albums and then start sucking in an epic way. So as for that, I dig early Emperor, early Mayhem, early Burzum, early Immortal, early Enslaved, Ildjarn, Bone Awl, Nile, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Mammatus, The Sword, Orthodox, Nachtmystium, Wolves in the Throne Room, and a lot of other stuff. I prefer black metal, stoner metal, doom metal, and those sorts of things. The occasional death metal or grind band ain't bad either.
Favorite guitarists :
Jimi Hendrix, Doug Martsch (Built to Spill, Halo Benders, Treepeople), Kurt Ballou (Converge), J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Lou Reed (Velvet Underground), Sam Zurick (Joan of Arc, Make Believe)...
I hate guitarists who are all wank and can't write a decent hook to save their lives. Which is apparently most of what people actually like on here. There's more to music than just playing 800 notes a second, kids!
Favorite bassists :
Joe Lally (Fugazi), Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order), Fred Erskine (Hoover, June of 44, Him - not the shitty Finnish band, mind you), John Cale (Velvet Underground), Sam Zurick (Cap'n Jazz)...
Cut the snap crackle pop shit, bro.
Favorite books :
Anything by Jack Kerouac, Hunter S. Thompson, Kurt Vonnegut, Haruki Murakami, William S. Burroughs, or Charles Bukowski.
Favorite movies :
Brazil, Up in Smoke, A Clockwork Orange, Office Space, Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski

I am not a shredophile. I enjoy music regardless of its genre, as long as it's good. Technical skill has nothing to do with quality, and frankly, nothing is worse than boring radio metal by bands in whose songs you can hear the posturing and the Parkinson's Camera that undoubtedly render the video hilarious (see: Cradle of Filth, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, etc.), especially when "chops" are used as a substitute for atmosphere and genuine feeling. I hate the sound of most mainstream metal albums for exactly this reason.
Keep music evil.
