Having finally completed Ubisoft's Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, the third installment in the Brothers in Arms story, I decided to right a review.
What can I say? Fucking amazing. Set during Operation Market Garden during the Second World War, you play as Sergeant Matt Baker as he journeys through Southern Holland with his faithful squad.
Many features in the game are the same as the previous two, for example, supressing your enemy before flanking to finish them off. No run-and-gun like other WW2 FPS such as COD and MOH. However the game is packed with many new features, no health bar, and a new "Gears of War style" cover system which with the touch of a button allows your character to "dig in" behind walls. Hell's Highway has a damage system similar to that of COD 3-5. Instead of a health meter the screan gradually turns red when your character is in danger of being shot. The darker the screen goes the closer your character is to being KIA.
Another wonderful feature is destructable evironments. In most FPS games you woul dbe safe from machine gun fire and grenades by hiding behind a wooden fence, in BIA HH however, bullets can easily tear up the wooden fence your covering behind leaving you exposed at the mercy of the enemy. Adding to the challenge of staying alive. Machine gun fire can destroy wooden fences and grenades or rocket fire can destory sandbags, again leaving you with not cover.
As with the previous games the scenery is well detailed and very beautiful, the weapons are authentic in both look and sound, as well as uniforms. Character detail is superb, from physical appearance down to their own character story. The violence is gritty, there's pletny of swearing which adds to the hell of the situation, including the addition of a new "slow mo death" sequence, where if scoring a grenade kill or a headshot, the camrea slows down and zooms in showing either a blood splattering headshot or, for grenades, the view of many Germans being blown sky high, some with limbs missing.
Despite all the fantastic features in the game, I only really have one gripe. That is that sometimes it's very easy to survive a mission without dying once, providing you use the cover system instead of runnin ginto a room full of Germans guns blazing, which will definitly get you killed.
All in all, Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway is an exciting, gritty view of warfare which will leave all fans of the series well satisfied and definitly wanting more.
I can't believe it, I never thought it would happen, but my hatred for people and mankind has stooped to a new low, I have become a misanthropist. I have lost whatever shred of fondness and faith in humanity I had left.

I for one find it horrifically ironic, and slightly disturbing. But then again, I cannot find any good in humanity, we are selfish, lying, manipulative creatures who spend most of our time killing each other through war and violence. We serve no purpose in our existence. I think it's high time humans were wiped off the face of the earth for good.
