deftonesordie wrote on Sep 5th, 2009 1:27pmthat's alright, different strokes for different folks. I'm a music fiend, and will pretty much listen to anything, but I've found most of my writing styles have focused in that genre. I'm a huge Jazzhead, and have found myself slowly migrating towards jam bands and more complex styles of instrumentalism.
once again, different strokes, my friend quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 20th, 2009 6:10pmNothing wrong with that! As long as you enjoy it, it doesnt matter what you do with it as far as Im concerned. quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 20th, 2009 6:51amAnd the studio was just a local studio we found. Pretty close to a professional studio, but not quite.
But thanks for the kind words. I think your style is definitely unique. What are you hoping to accomplish with your music? is it a hobby? or do you plan on getting a band together? quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 20th, 2009 6:47amNo. Not signed yet. I formed the band back a couple years ago. It remained a 3 peice instrumental band until recently. And we have been with our current vocalist since march I think? So as this lineup we've only been around for a few months. We've only played 5 or 6 shows, but its picking up faster than I had anticipated. We've have a couple out shows out out of our usual area, and then in october we have some stuff booked out of state. With a pretty nice payout. For both. The one in september is at least an $1100 payout. I think so anyway. If youre using the GBP currency then that is about 665 GBP. Its not a ton, but since we've only been around for a few months, thats pretty nice. I dont care for the money. Thats what I have a job for. But it seems that the others in the band are pretty intent on getting paid for everything. Not really my style, but I go along with it. quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 4:40pmOne last thing, haha. Redefining was recorded before the rest of them were. It was done on day 1 and the rest were done on day 3. Which were weeks apart. So maybe he changed his amp settings between the two songs? I never thought about that. Thats a possibility! quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 4:36pmalso, all the rhythm parts were double tracked. 1 left speaker, 1 right speaker. So that may have something to with why it does not sound as clear as it could have been. That studio moved to a new location (where we re-recorded vocals with our new singer) and he had told me at that time, he got all new recording equipment. He told me if we ever decided to record with him again, the sound would be much better. quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 4:34pmThanks for the compliments! No, these songs were recorded before I got that Prestige. All the rhythm stuff and clean stuff was recorded with my Ibanez RG470, with an X2N in the bridge, which is basically dimarzio's version of an EMG. I also didnt get to use my amp in the studio either. At that time I was using a b-52 at212. It crapped out the DAY of recording, so I had to use our producers Mesa Boogie Express 550 he had in the studio where we were. I wasnt extremely happy with the sound, but it worked. But yes, its not a bright tone. That's what I did like about it. I think I would have liked a little more midrange however. All the lead stuff was recorded an RG4EX1 I used to own. Same settings, same amp. Just used pro tools to add chorus to it, because the studio wasnt grounded very well. So I had a massive hum coming from it. quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 3:18amYes, I believe the FRED is a medium output pickup If I remember correctly. Unfortunately, I didnt have a choice in getting the tone zone. The Prestige I bought came with shallower pickup cavities than usual (which is why I suspect I got mine on clearance for $200 off). I bought the d-activator X and it did not fit. I spoke with dimarzio and said Ibanez had done ONE production like with shallower cavities by mistake. My only other option was to route out all the cavities. So I got the only high output humbucker that would fit my guitar that was dimarzio brand. I notice that due to the high bass and mid frequencies on the tone zone, if its height is set wrong (not really WRONG of course, just too high the strings) it sounds extremely muddy. So its not really one that you can set really high. I've always used a overdrive pedal to compensate for this. quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 18th, 2009 10:05pmThe Ibanez prestige had by far the worst stock pickups I've ever heard. They were the V series neck and bridge pickups. Absolutely horrendous in my opinion. I swapped the bridge out for a dimarzio tone zone, and the neck for the dimarzio air norton. I left the single coil stock. If you want a really FAT sounding pickup, get the tone zone. I bought it because it has higher bass frequencies and lower treble than most any other pickups I researched. I was worried that them also having an extremely high mid range frequency it wouldnt sound very good, but I think the high bass and high mid range work very well together. Paul Gilbert has an old demo video for the tone zone on youtube I believe. My other Ibanez has the lace sensor red in the single coil slot. I dont know how it works in other positions on the guitar, but it really wasnt what I thought it was going to be. Not really as "humbucker" as I think they make it out to be. I bought the guitar that way though. quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 18th, 2009 10:04pmIts okay. Just a little minor misunderstanding, nothing to worry about now.
That is a heavy modded strat! My strat has schaller locking tuners, as well as schaller strap locks that came with it. Its all stock however. I cant bring myself to mod any of it because I feel it will retain its value better. I would just change the pickups though, the humbucker namely. The single coils are tex mex, which are great. But the humbucker is a diamond back, and it doesnt have much gain on it, but I suppose strats really arent made stock for heavy music! quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 18th, 2009 9:07pmIf I cannot claim that basswood doesnt sound as full to my ears as mahogany, then you cannot claim that it does not. So I guess we are both in the wrong then right? The difference between my opinion and yours however is that I have items at my disposal to have said opinion. I respect anybody's opinion. If you dont think for some reason it sounds different, than thats fine. Does all mahogany sound fuller than basswood? I dont know. I've not tried every guitar on the market. And Im sure you havent either. But I can tell you for a FACT that my guitars do sound different. And as I stated earlier, thats something nobody can tell me any differently. Perhaps I did go a bit overboard when making comments about your mexican strat. Im open to any and all types of opinions, but when somebody tells me that my opinion is wrong? that's irritating.
Though I am very curious, what kinds of modifications have you made to your strat? I am just going to assume pickups for sure. But what else? What kind of pickup configuration? quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 18th, 2009 9:01pmI guess my comment didnt go through earlier.
Considering Im not the only one who posted that mahogany sounds fuller than basswood, it seems to be the opinion of at least 1 other person, and Im sure we are not the only two. I know the hardware comment was crap. I gave a crap sarcastic response to a crap checklist. They had similar body style and shape. The fuller sounding one has stock fender pickups, which I would assume you know arent exactly the fattest sounding pickups ever made, so according to your list, the only other explanation I had was that since mahogany according to you does NOT sound fuller than basswood, it must be my hardware. My black hardware must really take away from the fullness of the sound. A ridiculous response for a ridiculous claim. quote |
CkY freak wrote on Aug 18th, 2009 4:24pmHey, you brought up the hardware. Not me!
The bottom line is this; you, nor anybody else, can ever tell ME, what MY gear sounds like. You wouldnt know if it sounds fuller, because I see you're not playing through a mahogany bodied strat. Nor, are you playing through a basswood Ibanez Prestige. So therefore, you have no clue what it sounds like. So if you dont know, dont tell anybody what its going to sound like or not. quote |

I see your from the 7 string thread. Do you use your 7 string as your main guitar? Or is it still a 6? | They certainly have a quality like no one else.
Yeah, I hang out there, but I'm not a "member". I don't use my seven as my main guitar, no. I don't always have need for it. My main guitar is a six'er in Drop D. It suits my band better than the seven, as my bassist only has four strings and we don't exactly play Korn or Dream Theater.

Tedward wrote on Jul 1st, 2009 1:33amMusic Has the Right to Our Children is a pretty cool album also, but their are only a handful of actual full length tracks. Most our just conceptual phrases and stuff. I read that BoC had actually written like 100 little songs and just chose the best ones for the record. Its still pretty good but different. More artistic and less musical.
As for all of Boards of Canada's demo albums, I can't really say anything about those. They have quite a few great songs but then a couple are a little bit too strange.
I'd recommend The Campfire Headphase, but whatever you choose enjoy listening to it. Its all great music. quote |

From what I have heard Geogaddi is the most futuristic sounding album. Dawn Chorus, A beautiful Place Out in the Country, Julie and Candy, and Sunshine recorder are my favourites.
I really like all the songs from The Campfire Headphase. They are a lot more nostalgic and old-fashioned sounding, its almost sort of creepy. Its hard to explain. I love almost every song on that one though.
Trans-Canada Highway is also very good, but its only a 4-track EP. To me its similar to the Campfire Headphase
