Give jimi Hedrix any guitar and he'll still be jimi hendrix. With that said I still feel it's important to get a guitar that suits your play style and music you make. I play with a Taylor 314CE I love the cutaway, and teh bright tones suit the genre of music I like mainly soft rock, folk, indie, etc.
If you preffer bands more along the lines of Nickelback, Nirvana, Rock bands with more of an edge, a standard dreadnaught is the way to go.
Taylor is brighter, cleaner, crisper Martin is Warm, Rich, mellow
I see what you're saying! I don't own any Taylors or Martins but I did work at a Guitar Center and was able to try both daily. I agree with you that Taylors are brighter sounding and Martins have an opposite quality. I don't think I would buy either since the Taylors are too bright for me and I don't care for Martins, but I have two Yamaha's and they sound surprisingly rich and suit what I play very well. I actually have my eyes on a Gibson Advanced Jumbo. It is deep and warm and feels great when I'm playing it. Not to mention it's beautiful! Though it is $2,000 brand new, it's the higher end guitar I would definitely purchase if I could afford it.
