I got stuck into engineering my band one time in '92. Some friend of a friend-type guy said he'd come over a 'produce' a demo for us. Long story short, he'd an ancient Tascam, and no mics. I had to run everything thro' the PA, and add a couple of ambient mics. Our guitarists' 'Edge' sound went AWOL, and my bass sounded awful thro' the studio's Peaveys. So I had to get my sleeves rolled up, and get into it. It sounded ok after a while - but sadly I forgot to turn the air-con off, and that's most of what you can hear on the tapes. I still listen to them once in a while for a giggle!

Pain in the arse when that happens! It's why I believe in a) engineering myself, and b) a bass rig can never have too much grunt.

I've seen a Rick copy in a shop near me, the same on you have. How close does it get to the real Ricky tone?

Hey sorry I just got that comment....
Check out "Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer" and "Sunlandic Twins". One guy writes and records all the parts to all of their songs. He's super talented.

i'm pretty confident in my electrical skills, where would i be able to get new caps and is there some sort of tool i need to rebias the amp?

That depends... What amp do you have?

it's not broken so to speak it's just that it's 30 years old and i want to get it all checked out. there are a few things that concern me though such as it doesn't distort as nicely as most tube amps but that could just be down to the low volumes i use it at. and there's a strange thing where if i play any note on the G string of any guitar through it it warbles like its out of tune.

Sounds like it needs the electrolytic capacitors replaced. When they start to go bad you lose lots of volume and when you hit a loud note or a lay note then you get an out of tune occilating noise. It's a pretty straight forward job so if you are comfortable digging around inside an amp you could probably do it yourself. When you do that you are going to have to rebias the amp too. If you don't think it's something you can do then I'd check with your local music shop and find out who they use to service amps.

hi

do you know of anyone in the south wales cardiff or newport areas that can repair a vintage valve amp and could you put me in touch with them please?

Unfortunately I only know any amp techs in that area that I trust. The whole reason I got into amp repair to begin with was because I got tired of amp techs steeling valuable parts off my vintage amps and/or charging me for work that they didn't do.

What is the amp doing? I might be able to help you trouble shoot so that then when you do take it into the tech you can know what actually needs done. Your best bet in finding a tech is to go to your nearest music shop and ask for the number of the guy they send their broken amps to.

Ah ok, that's cool.

Could you do me a favour please? You mentioned that your listening to jazz more nowadays, and I've been a metal guy for the last few years. Could you give a few recommendations to start me off? I listen to stuff like Weather Report, Stanley Clarke, Nina Simone already, but that's about it.

Thanks!

Why don't you get some tickets? I think there's still some left.

Dan, I'm glad it got there! When you have a moment can you send me a copy of the Urge? Its the only Stu Hamm CD I can't seem to find.
