One time I was in a Hot Topic and I noticed two "scene" dressed girls looking at t-shirts. Upon spying a Sex Pistols shirt, I heard one say to the other one, "Did you know that the Sex Pistols weren't a real band?" The other said, "Really?" The first one replied, "Yeah, they only pretended they were so they could sell t-shirts and stuff."
I lowered my head and walked out of the store.
Unfortunately that is a true story.
It's been my experience that it's better to make friends out of band mates rather than make band mates out of friends.
