Melodic Death Metal is a separate sub-genre of metal, highly influenced by Britain's Carcass, but really emerged and thrived in Sweden, like In Flames, Dark Tranquility, and At the Gates. these are bands like the ones you described in your original post, and will help you most in writing your report. There are bands like Nihlist, Entombed, and even Vomitory, who made some of the first Brutal Death Metal (another sub-genre) who play death metal more similar to that (and heaviliy influenced by) of the american scene, but for the purposes of your report, i think it would be easier to compare melodic death metal (and its swedish origins) bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquility, and At the Gates to traditional "old school" death metal (and its american origins) bands like Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, and Deicide
