Having decided it's time to actually learn something about this instrument rather than just how to play a few songs on it, here's my new practice template. This week I'm learning the modes of the A Minor scale.
This kind of setup is actually very similar to what I did when I was going for my RN. I went to school
here (it was USNY Regents College back then) and it was 100% self-study so I had to be very responsible about actually studying. Contrary to what many people think, it's not 'correspondence school'. In fact, it's actually a whole lot harder than going to day school because you do have to be so self-disciplined... what to speak of the fact of having a whole semester's credit ride on one test, and that their requirements for passing are so incredibly tough that only 57% of candidates pass the clinical exam on their first try. (That's accurate as of 1997; I don't know how it is now.) And, they make you wait
a whole year before they let you take it again. But all that's another story for another day. The point is that somehow I managed to be disciplined enough to get through that, and so now I'm going to be disciplined enough to get through this.
I'm actually very pleased with how I've set this up. Feel free to learn along at home; you'll need a timer and a metronome. I got my timer online for free
here. I like it because it has huge numbers you can see clear across the room and because it has some really cool sounds to let you know when your time is up. If you do decide to try to play along, let me know what you think of this system.
