Happy Birthday To Me!

Current mood: awake

Well its my birthday today finally. I am now 20 years old and I feel like an old man! I wish I was still only 16. The years go by so quickly its just crazy I remember like it was yesterday my first day of highschool. Even though that day was years ago it still doesnt feel real. The good thing is noone will call me a kid anymore. So I say happy birthday to me.
On another note I have finally combined jazz and metal together and I shall be recording this soon to post here. Thank you for reading

My Two Loves In Music

Current mood: thankful

I always say that my two true loves in music are metal and jazz. I love the speed, agression and raw power of metal. When it coemes to jazz I love the free flowing complexity and structure of jazz music. When I was first starting to listen to music metal appealed to me because I was an angry teen. Bands like Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and Kick Axe (Canadian 80's metal band for those who don't know) seemed to be the perfect fit. I love the history of metal going back to Black Sabbath, Motorhead and Judas Priest. The contribution those bands ad others gave to metal can still be felt today. Black Babbath with the flat 5th or blues note, Judas Priest with the screaming vocals and dual lead guitarists and Motorhead with the speed and raw power. The crazy thing about metal is there are so many genre's and subgenre's. You could go on for days and still miss a bunch of them.
Jazz in that aspect is very similar. The history of jazz goes back to the late 1800's. When I was in highschool there was a competition between all of the musicians in the school. Everyone wanted to be better than everyone else and I was no different. I was always one of the better guitaists in the school but when it came to bass there was only one better than me, Dan McDonald. Because we were both taking music class and he wa a year older than me he was a part of the school jazz band. At first I wanted to be a part of the jazz band bcause it would prove my skill level. My Music teacher Miss Urquhart start training me to be the new jazz bass player the year before Dan left. At first I found the walking bass lines boring but when I played with the rest of the band I got this incredible feeling. The more and more I played with the band the better I got and the more my love for jazz grew.

Jazz and metal sound nothing alike but they have many things in common. They both have their complex/technical nature, sometimes playing at breakneck speeds, the number of subgenre's and rich history. Both genre's have their own style that set them appart from other forms of music. In jazz we have the swinging 8th note and in metal we have evil sound of the flat 5th. It takes alot of skill and tallent to play both genre's because of the technical nature of the music and if you don't have that skill it is very evident. These are just some of the reasons that I love Jazz and Metal. Over the years I have played in many different kinds of bands from rock to metal to jazz to punk and I have really felt at home playing jazz and metal. For a while now I have tried to combine the two styles with little to show of it but I will continue to try untill I reach my goal. I will always have two true loves when it comes to music and those two loves are Jazz and Metal.
