Hmmm, I've got two volume controls and the P90's volume is always at 10. The bridge bucker wont really be used for leads, and the P90's also used for single note riffs and stuff, so I could just roll the volume back on the SOB. |
Then I think the SOB would be a good choice for you. I'd reccomend 250K pots to go with it because it'll give you a better taper with the volume pot and it'll give you a slightly thicker sound which will also be good.
send me an email at chris@rockmonkeyguitars.com and I can send you the payment details and an invoice. The is the newest pickup in my lineup and you will be the 1st person to buy one so I'll also throgh in a free rock monkey shirt if you do decide to order.

Hey Cord. I have a Stagg Flying V with a GFS Dream 90 in the neckand I'm looking for a high gain bridge humbucker. I use this guitar for stoner/hard rock and metal, like Kyuss, Fu Manchu and Queens of the Stone Age, so I downtune to C with really heavy strings and run it with my VC30's drive channel and a fuzz. I was thinking of getting your SOB pickup, what would you suggest? |
Yeah, I think the SOB is a good option for you in terms of tone but it will have a LOT more output than your neck pickup and it will probably create a noticeable volume drop when switching from bridge to neck. Is that going to be an issue for you?

So I'll be wanting a set of 62s with modern staggers, cream covers and a little extra degaussing. How much exactly would that cost? |
It would $108 including shipping and after your UG discount. If you do want to order then send me an email at chris@rockmonkeyguitars.com for an invoice and payment details.

I'll probably be going for either a 7.25 or 9 radius. I'll be getting the neck in the summer, and the neck on it right now is a 9 I think (it's a Squier I'm gonna completely mod gradually until it's a brand new guitar). |
Then go with the modern stagger

hagggrrr, third comment in a row. It's an unwound G string, I don't know what came over me.
I'd still be after modern staggers though, right? |
What fretboard radius do you have on the guitar?

Ah yeah, I'm looking for a BSSM/Cali tone, so I guess I'd want something that sounds like '54 and '58 strats, so the '62 set does look quite good.
For the bridge pickup, I'm looking for something quite mellow and funky, something that'll do Purple Stain, Can't Stop and Give It Away. What would you recommend?
Cheers. |
In that case I'd say go with a full set of 62's with a little extra degaussing.
In that case I'd go with a full set of 62's but keep in mind that the bridge is going to be bright and funky

CorduroyEW wrote on Mar 4th, 2009 11:03amHey, I thought I'd post this here before emailing you. I was looking for some Strat pickups that did a nice vintage Strat tone, kinda like on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and also on a good few Stevie Ray Vaughan songs. I have Seymour Duncan SSL-1s and your Smooth Groove '59 and '62 sets in mind. I play through a Laney VC30 if that matters, and I just wondered what set you thought would be the best to go with. Thanks in advance.

Yeah... The 62 set is going to be your best bet. Keep in mind though, that the 62 bridge pickup sounds top heavy and thin. Fru uses this pickup a lot when he is playing through his mountain of FX or doing some of his funky clean riffs. Most people that get the 62 set get a swingin' warm, a CEW, or a Hot texan in the bridge. So if you want the top heavy thin bridge tone of the early 60's then go with a full set of 62's but if you want a fuller, more balanced bridge tone then we should look at your other options for that position.
