I'm working on a band at the moment, recording demos, but my amp sounds crap! Now, it's my 21st birthday in june so i'm thinking about treating myself to a new amp, and am think about getting some kind of head and cabinet but my friend is questioning my motives saying that stacks are pointless because they'll go no further that 1.5 on the master volume.
What do you reckon? i mean, if ii have a half stack, it'll be adequate enough for any indoor venue when/if i take my band live? plus it looks cool! lol, any one got any opinions? maybe some pros and cons to help me with my decision between a half stack and a combo amp?
If the stack and combo are the same rating then having a combo is cheaper than head + cab. But the volume will be pretty much similar. 50W is 50W, through the same rated speaker.
A stack is harder to lug around, but many venues might already have cabs you can just plug your head into, and a head is smaller than a combo.
Either a stack or a combo will work equally well in a venue with a PA since your amp will be mic'd either way.
Also consider if you're getting a tube or a solid state. With a high power tube amp you won't be able to get tube drive at bedroom volumes, but it'll sound 10x better live when you're cranked.
