Finally, I've made a blues song that does something different. It's still a 12-bar structure, but I'm using an unusual mode and a chord structure outside of the regular intervals. { Tags : Delta, blues, devil, interval, twelve, bar }
Well he's a full grown man who cannot help himself
Sneaks away from his wife to the arms of someone else
I'm their pastor and their preacher, judge and jury when they're brought to trial
I know the girl is half to blame even though she's just a child
She said he held her down so he could have his way
She must have led him on with the things little girls say
Don't need no police to tell them how wicked they have been
I'll deal with their adultry myself even though she's just fifteen
Father forgive them for what she told me that they've done
Oh, forgive your daughter and forgive your son
Thank you lord that I am not a sinner like them
Thank you lord that I am a righteous man
He takes it like a man, but she don't come along
He takes his licks but she claims she's done nothing wrong
He's been punished now forgiven but her folks say she won't be punished too
I say don't you come back to church, God's got no place for sinners like you
I am your chosen Lord, from my mouth come your words
You fix what is broken, I pray Lord you'll fix her
Someone said I should not judge her you did not give me that authority
Well if I was wrong, oh Lord...
A short, silly Folk/Pop song I started writing when my electricity got cut off last year. I'm playing a 12-String Acoustic Guitar. { Tags : Keep, Company, Folk, Alec, Liddle, 12String, Acoustic, Guitar }
The lights are out, I'm on my own,
Feelin' like a stranger in my own home
I'm making noise, To fill the space,
Make it seem like a friendlier place
I'm wasting time, You're not,
You're busy using that brain you've got
When you come in, I'll say, "Hello,"
I don't need to grab you and say, "Baby, please don't go"
Chorus:
Just keep me company, tell me I'm okay
Tell me you won't fly away today
Keep me company, tell me I'm fine
Tell me you won't leave me if you're mine
Just keep me company, tell me I'm okay
Tell me you won't grow wings and fly away
Keep me company, tell me I'm alright
Tell me you won't leave me on my own tonight
I think I suffer from emotional paralysis,
I reached that conclusion through self-over-analysis,
But morbid introspection robbed me of my life's direction,
So this following section, is just a detailed song dissection
Play the one chord, then the four-add-nine,
Move up to the fifth, then the four-add-nine a second time
Yeah, better songs have been written by lesser men,
I use the same rhyming words again and again and again
Chorus
Maybe I should cry with the cryin'
Maybe I shoulde die with the dyin'
Maybe I should laug when you laugh out loud
Mayb I should learn 'cause I don't know how,
To feel the way you're feelin' too
All I know is you don't feel like I do
You don't feel like I do
Maybe I'll keep you company, tell you you're okay
Tell you I won't fly away today
Keep you company, tell you you're fine
Tell you I won't leave you if you're mine
Keep you company, tell you you're okay
Tell you I won't grow wings and fly away
Keep you company, tell you you're alright
Tell you I won't leave you on your own tonight
I will always love you
A rough blues song, written for the Dobro, but I recorded it at my folk's house on my Dad's old acoustic guitar with a glass slide. { Tags : Delta, Blues, Acoustic, Slide }
A country/folk/pop song I've been demoing for the past year or so. I play 12-String and 6-String acoustic guitars and Dobro. { Tags : Alec, Liddle, Dobro, 12String, acoustic, guitar, folk, country }
The first time that I saw your face,
I thought it would be the last
I didn't expect to think about you
After so much time had passed
But you come back, you come back
Come back to me
But you come back, you come back
And know I see,
Your face everywhere
I see, the colour of your hair
When the sun is in the sky,
It turns blue, that's the colour of your eyes
Get outa my head, get outa my head
You oughta be payin' rent
Get outa my head, get outa my head
Cause girl you've got me bent
On seein' you again, seein' you again
On seein' you again, seein' you again
I don't know what I'm doing
I don't know what I'm thinking
I don't know why I feel like this
Feel's just like I'm sinking
I don't know what I'm doing
I don't know what I'm thinking of
I don't know why I feel like this
Feel's like I'm sinking is this love?
The next time that I see your face,
I hope it won't be the last
Wonder if you'll remember me,
After so much time has past
But I'll come back, I'll come back
Come back to you
I'll come back, I'll come back
We'll start again, we'll make it a,
New day every day
Things I mean but I don't say,
Would make you think that I've gone mad,
Or maybe you'd think this is the best love you ever had
Get outa my head, get outa my head
You oughta be payin' rent
Get outa my head, get outa my head
Cause girl you've got me bent
On seein' you again, seein' you again
On seein' you again, seein' you again
A sort of Bluegrass/Appalachian/Spiritual tune I've written on the banjo. I've written it to be backed with a reggae style arrangement, but this is the stripped down country version. { Tags : Bluegrass, Appalachian, Spiritual, Banjo }
Hey there little baby,
Don't you go and worry,
Mama's gonna feed you,
When she gets home
Now he's finished working,
Daddy's gone drinking
Though you feel lonely,
You're not alone
Clothes don't fit you,
Daddy just hit you,
Mama says you can't do,
Nothing right
No use crying,
You've given up trying,
To close your eyes to sleep at night
Chorus:
You know Jesus loves all,
Of his children,
Black, white, young and old,
No matter where they've been,
Every single one's been,
Bound and broken,
Still he wants his children to,
Come unto him
Still he wants his children to,
Come unto him
You don't have to grow up so,
Complicated,
Don't hide your face so,
The world can't see,
Hold your head up,
Oh no life is never easy,
But don't make it harder than,
It needs to be
If the sun don't shine down,
On your face,
You know you're going,
To a better place
You've been hurt and,
You've done some hurtin',
But there's one thing that,
You know for certain
Chorus
I say oh,
Do you wanna go,
To where there's no death,
'Cause your body doesn't grow,
And it never gets sick,
And you never get old?
There's a new life waiting,
Whe he takes you home
Another folky song I've had kicking around for a few years. I'm still not sure about my voice singing it. { Tags : Petty, Theft, Folk, Country, 12String, Harmonica }
She was sitting on the stage,
And when we got to talking,
She said all the things,
That I wished she would
She was so beautiful
She said she had a girlfriend,
But I didn't care,
The converstation was good
She didn't care that I was broke
She laughed at all my jokes
And grabbed me
And kissed me as I left
She stole my heart,
Just 'cause she was herself,
She made it look so effortless,
It was just a petty theft
Chorus:
She made me feel like,
The smartest guy in the world,
The best looking,
'Cause I was hooking up with her
She made me think that,
There couldn't be two people,
Better suited for,
Each other than we were
She made me feel like,
The luckiest guy alive
When she squeezed my thigh,
I could've died a happy man
She made me feel like,
Everything's alright,
'Cause she liked me,
Just the way I am
If I don't see her again,
I'll still remember,
The time we spent,
Yeah, I'll look back and smile
No it's not the kind of love that lasts forever,
Just a couple hours that we spent together,
But I don't mind,
She made me feel good for a while
I'd forgotten how good that,
Feeling good felt,
I'd spent that day wishing I was,
Somebody else instead of the person that I am
She's not the one, there'll be another,
And although I'm not the world's greatest lover,
Now I don't think that I can't love,
I know I can
Words & Music by Bill Mallonee. I learned of his album "Stolen Kisses and Other Thefts". I play 12-String Acoustic Guitar and Lap-Style Dobro. { Tags : Bill, Mallonee, String, Acoustic, Dobro, Lap, Steel }
So long Abby don't you let it get you down
Once in a while just give the world a smile not an upside down frown
It's alright, it's OK, to cry at the end of a bad day,
When it's overcast and the world is grey, sometimes the sun shines through the clouds anyway
The best thing about who you are,
Is who you love,
Who made you and,
The stuff that you are made of
So long Abby, Carolina's not too far away,
To think about sometimes, and hope that we're gonna stay,
Friends, I'm glad we met, I'm happy to get a note from you,
Telling me about your life and all the stuff you're going through
The best thing about where you are,
Is that you're there
You make it better so,
Don't be worried don't be scared
So long Abby, you know you made a grown man cry
Hearts break for you even though they don't know why
Who could not love you? I dunno, but it's a scary thought
'Cause everyone I know would, and as love goes that's a hell of a lot
The best thing about who you are,
Is who you love,
Don't you know you're your father's joy,
And the joy of your father up above
An Appalachian folk ballad I wrote as a tribute to a cinematic icon. Billy Redden is the inbred looking kid from the start of Deliverance. I play the banjo, lap-style dobro and 12-string acoustic guitar { Tags : Banjo, Dobro, lap, string, acoustic, appalachian, folk, ballad, deliverance }
The casting call came around the town, looking for a kid,
Who looked like he could be the anti-christ, most didn't but one boy did
Everybody had heard the word, that was a-going around,
That a boy named Billy Redden, was the ugliest kid in that Georgia town
Everybody knew, Billy's pa was the brother,
Of the dear old lady who was little Billy's mother
Well this might seem uncommon to a city boy like me,
But up there in those Georgia hills they like to keep it in the family
They used a stuntman for his arms to pick that banjo fast
Though Billy looked retarded he was the top of his third grade class
Maybe that's cause he was sixteen, but he's as smart as me or you
Billy's face haunted the cinema goers of nineteen-seventy-two
When some folks see him they point and laugh and say something mean,
Some fat men shout, "don't rape me," though Billy wasn't in that scene
That part was played by Bill McKinney, and he's been made to register,
With the state police in Georgia to be put on their list of sex offenders
He washes dishes in his restaurant now to earn his keep,
He used to do tours of the old Chatooga River, but the death toll was too steep
Most folks can't say their face is known, but some folks yeah, they can,
Now Billy Redden's all grown up into a scary looking man
A little jazzy song I wrote over the summer. I came up with the chord progression during the Wuh-ohs session, and the lyrics camer piece by piece afterward. The full version will have trumpets. { Tags : Summer, Jazz }
Permit me dear,
If I might dream,
Of a summer's day,
Beside a stream,
We talk together
We discuss the weather
Hand in hand
Side by side
You and I
Forgive me if,
The imagery's dated,
But it's not,
Overpopulated,
It's underrated,
And as previously stated,
It's just we two,
It's just me and you
Maybe someday,
I'll see you there,
When the weather's fair,
I'll love you in that summer,
Dress I saw you wear,
With flowers in your hair,
We won't have a care
I'll love you till,
The day I die,
I'll laugh when you laugh,
And cry when you cry,
If you let my imagination fly,
Far away,
To a summer's day
Another bluesy spiritual number played lapstyle on the dobro. The lyrics are an adaptation of the 23rd Psalm. { Tags : Blues, Gospel, Spiritual, Psalm, Dobro, Lap, Slide }
I had the video of this Tegan and Sara song on my profile for a while. This is my version, with six tracks of my 12-String guitar. That's right... 72 strings. { Tags : Tegan, Sara, Video }
This is the oldest song I've posted up here, and one of the only angry songs I've ever written. I can't even find where I have the lyrics written down.
You don't want me,
Or you want me to be,
All the things you see clearly I'm not
Make up your mind
Stop wasting my time,
If you want things I just haven't got
You're a pain in my ass
You keep telling me that,
I'm moving too fast when I'm slow
You're not worth this
I don't like little miss,
Perfectionist please just go
You just rain on my parade
I want no part of your thin charade, it's all just a lie
I don't know why you must stand out of the crowd
You're just a cloud that blocks the sun in my sky
I'm not the man,
That fits in with your plan
I'm imperfect, your life's little taint
You'd rather a rich,
Handsome son of a bitch,
To gentleman, scholar or saint
You're after some fool,
Like you knew back in school,
With the cash and the clothes and the car
Well a fool's what you've got,
And that's one thing I'm not
You see now we'd never get far
You just rain on my parade
I want no part of your thin charade, it's all just a lie
I don't know why you must stand out of the crowd
You're just a cloud that blocks the sun in my sky
This is what Valentine's Day sounds like when you've been single for years. I'm playing my 12-String Acoustic and Lap-Style Dobro. { Tags : Bill, Mallonee, valentines, day }
I've had this traditional tune in my head all day. It's a shame I don't play the fiddle, but here it is with Guitar, Dobro and Banjo { Tags : Old, timey }
I had a video of this up on my profile for a while too. It's my version of my favourite Eliot Smith song, performed live on my brother's acoustic guitar. { Tags : Eliot, smith, acoustic, fingerstyle }
A short folky, fingerstyley song I wrote over the past month or so. Unusually for me I managed to write a song about somebody else without turning it back to being really all about me... { Tags : Acoustic, Fingerstyle }
Watching a movie and bless your soul,
When I fall asleep against you,
You don't wake me till the credits roll
Keep me up till the sun rises
Keep you talking, keep you safe from,
Any nasty surprises
I don't quite understand,
No, I don't understand,
But I'll do what I can,
Though I am just a man
Screw your eyes closed so tight,
It hurts too much to sleep,
And all it does it shut out all the light
You hold your hands over your eyes,
And mouth. You bite your lip and,
You tell yourself you will not cry
I don't think it's fair,
No, I don't think it's fair,
You feel the way you do,
And see the things you do
I'm not sure I want to know,
What sneaks in when your eyes are open and,
What you see when your eyes are closed
I just hope you get some sleep,
When you close your eyes you'll be free,
From all invading imagery
Waking does not stop the nightmares,
But just because no-one can see them,
Doesn't mean that no-one cares
Things that should be easy aren't,
You think you'll never make it but,
You can't see you've come so far
I hope I'll be there
Oh, I hope I'll be there,
Even if I don't know what to do,
And I know I cannot fix you
I know I cannot fix you
I know I cannot fix you
I hope you get some sleep,
When you close your eyes you'll be free,
From all invading imagery
I'm not sure what genre this is... but I'm playing an acoustic guitar, banjo and mandolin. It's inspired by all my recent muses, both instruments and personages...
You honour me by telling the truth,
Even when it hurts
You know I cried 'cause some girl lied,
But God know you're not her
You tell me take a step back, you've gotta get your life on track,
Before you've got time for me
You say you still want to see me, take it easy,
And someday maybe
Chorus:
If I can stand it
It's not so much "is not" as "if"
I'll wait for your love,
Tom's right it's the hardest part
I can only hurt you more,
If I go straight for the heart
You still need healing, till you feeling,
Firm on your two feet
Till you know you don't need me, you just want me,
To feel complete
Chorus
Is it indefinate?
Is it ambiguous?
Is it uncertain, what's happening between the two of us?
Is it indefinate?
Is it ambiguous?
Is it love, that's passing between the two of us?
I guess we're taking the long way round,
To what I wanted all along
Not selfish enough to say,
If I don't get my way I'll be gone
I release control and Oh! my soul,
It hurts so much to do
You might say I'll get the girl some day,
But I won't say it's not you
Yes, I did a Pogues song. It really exposes my Northern Irish accent... I'm playing guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica. { Tags : Pogues, Irish, Banjo, Mandolin, traditional }
