Oh my god. That's all I can say about the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival.
First things first: This festival was held on July 12 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA (even though every single band thought it was San Francisco for some reason). It started at around 1:30 PM and went till 11:10 PM.
The four headliners were Mastodon, Dragonforce, Disturbed, and Slipknot. Their shows were the longest of the day.
36 Crazyfists went on first, they were ok. After them was Stigmurder, they were also good. I only watched a song or two of them. Suicide Silence went on at around 3:15, and they were totally awesome. Next up was Five Finger Death Punch, they were only so-so. After them was Black Tide, and they were surprisingly good, considering that all of the members are under the age of 20. Airbourne came after them, and they were alright. Me and my friend Jason started making our way to our seats to get some rest about five minutes after Airbourne started.
We sat and waited for Mastodon to come on, and on our way to our seats I met one of the guitarists for Suicide Silence. We watched Mastodon play one song before we made our way to the Hot Topic stage for Underoath (part of the reason we did this was to get right up front because they're my friend Jason's favorite band... we also did it because Mastodon SUCKED). While we were resting we missed the Red Chord and part of Walls of Jericho. No big deal
Underoath was awesome. The barricade was actually really comfortable, because the mosh pit was way behind us. I got some great pictures of the band. I really enjoyed this show, even though I don't listen to Underoath that much. When they finished, Machine Head started, but we needed to make our way to the main stage for Dragonforce.
Dragonforce, despite what everyone says, was amazing! They did Through the Fire and Flames almost perfectly, and they also did songs like Operation Ground and Pound, Revolution Deathsquad, and Valley of the Damned. It seemed to me like they really practiced their music. They also played a song or two from their upcoming album, "Ultra Beatdown" (don't ask haha), and they sounded spot-on.
Next came Disturbed, and for only a four-piece band, they were excellent. I don't even like them that much, but I knew the words to most of their songs, and sang along. They did songs like Ten Thousand Fists, Indestructible, Inside the Fire, Perfect Insanity, Liberate, and they closed with Down With the Sickness, of course. My camera crapped out during their show, so I only got two acceptable pictures. By the end of their show, my neck was starting to hurt from headbanging all day
Finally, Slipknot rolled around at 10:07 PM. They started with a clip from Danger - Keep Away, then slammed into Surfacing. They kept kicking ass with the songs The Blister Exists, People = Shit, The Heretic Anthem, Psychosocial, Disasterpiece, Duality, Before I Forget, Prosthetics, and (Sic). On (Sic), Joey's drum kit (with him included) rose into the air and pointed him at the ground. Then it spun him around. That was their closing song.
Overall, this was my favorite concert I've been to. I took a lot of pictures, and I dedicate all my Slipknot, Black Tide, and Airbourne pictures to Page/Rhoads. The rest go to camel28z. Yeeha!
