A new guitar

Current mood: happy

Ibanez Destroyer II, extremely rare. Worth over 1000 dollars if it was in brand new condition (which it certainly isn't ). The one I recieved from my band's drummer yesterday was built in July of 1980. This thing is 28 years old! Me, my dad, and my band's bassist Corey are going to work on it to improve its looks and electronics. It sounds perfect, but it's missing an entire volume pot and the other two pots are missing knobs. It was originally metallic red, but now it's kind of ugly and definitely battle scarred. Many, many chips in the paint It also has an aftermarket Seymour Duncan pickup in the bridge position, making it sound about as good as my other Ibanez (which sounds phenomenal ). Its body is that of an Explorer, but with some minor differences. With some new strings, locking tuners and a paint job (black with lime green splatter paint), this guitar should be a very welcome member of my guitarsenal. I'll have pics of this project up soon

Band Developments

Current mood: exhausted

So our name has been changed from Vermilion (which even my dad thought was a shitty name) to Slaying the Wicked. Corey is now on bass because he isn't so good at guitar, and the second guitarist is currently some dude who's name I don't know yet . Another guy named Will is on the drums. Our first practice is most likely this Wednesday. Corey's girlfriend renamed the band, and personally, I think it sounds awesome!

By the way, I also just got back from New York City. 'Twas fun. Sort of.

Teh Mayhemz for Great Justice 2008

Current mood: pessimistic

Oh my god. That's all I can say about the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival.

First things first: This festival was held on July 12 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA (even though every single band thought it was San Francisco for some reason). It started at around 1:30 PM and went till 11:10 PM.

The four headliners were Mastodon, Dragonforce, Disturbed, and Slipknot. Their shows were the longest of the day.

36 Crazyfists went on first, they were ok. After them was Stigmurder, they were also good. I only watched a song or two of them. Suicide Silence went on at around 3:15, and they were totally awesome. Next up was Five Finger Death Punch, they were only so-so. After them was Black Tide, and they were surprisingly good, considering that all of the members are under the age of 20. Airbourne came after them, and they were alright. Me and my friend Jason started making our way to our seats to get some rest about five minutes after Airbourne started.

We sat and waited for Mastodon to come on, and on our way to our seats I met one of the guitarists for Suicide Silence. We watched Mastodon play one song before we made our way to the Hot Topic stage for Underoath (part of the reason we did this was to get right up front because they're my friend Jason's favorite band... we also did it because Mastodon SUCKED). While we were resting we missed the Red Chord and part of Walls of Jericho. No big deal :D

Underoath was awesome. The barricade was actually really comfortable, because the mosh pit was way behind us. I got some great pictures of the band. I really enjoyed this show, even though I don't listen to Underoath that much. When they finished, Machine Head started, but we needed to make our way to the main stage for Dragonforce.

Dragonforce, despite what everyone says, was amazing! They did Through the Fire and Flames almost perfectly, and they also did songs like Operation Ground and Pound, Revolution Deathsquad, and Valley of the Damned. It seemed to me like they really practiced their music. They also played a song or two from their upcoming album, "Ultra Beatdown" (don't ask haha), and they sounded spot-on.

Next came Disturbed, and for only a four-piece band, they were excellent. I don't even like them that much, but I knew the words to most of their songs, and sang along. They did songs like Ten Thousand Fists, Indestructible, Inside the Fire, Perfect Insanity, Liberate, and they closed with Down With the Sickness, of course. My camera crapped out during their show, so I only got two acceptable pictures. By the end of their show, my neck was starting to hurt from headbanging all day :haha:

Finally, Slipknot rolled around at 10:07 PM. They started with a clip from Danger - Keep Away, then slammed into Surfacing. They kept kicking ass with the songs The Blister Exists, People = Shit, The Heretic Anthem, Psychosocial, Disasterpiece, Duality, Before I Forget, Prosthetics, and (Sic). On (Sic), Joey's drum kit (with him included) rose into the air and pointed him at the ground. Then it spun him around. That was their closing song.

Overall, this was my favorite concert I've been to. I took a lot of pictures, and I dedicate all my Slipknot, Black Tide, and Airbourne pictures to Page/Rhoads. The rest go to camel28z. Yeeha!

I formed a band...

Current mood: It's summer!

The last time I posted a blog about me forming a band, the whole band never actually ended up happening. But the other day, I formed a metal/Latin jazz band with my friend Corey, called Vermilion. He plays guitar as well, so we need to find a vocalist (probably), and a drummer. Supposedely Corey found a bassist named Miles.

Progressive Nation

Current mood: chipper

This was by far the best show I've gone to. Three and Between the Buried and Me both played for a half hour each, Opeth played for close to an hour, and Dream Theater played for around an hour and a half. The only thing that sucked dick was that the gaylords at the ticket checking area banned me from bringing my camera. OWNED!

Three mostly played stuff from their most recent effort, The End is Begun. My favorites were "My Divided Falling", "All That Remains", "Battle Cry", and their closer, "Amaze Disgrace". So yeah, basically their whole show.

BTBAM played two songs :haha:. They did "Ants of the Sky" and "White Walls", which just so happen to be my two favorite BTBAM songs. And they're both 15 minutes long. Overall, they did incredibly well.

Opeth kicked major ass. They did about six or seven songs (I can't remember exactly, I wasn't really counting), and all of them were great. My favorites were "Wreath", "Master's Apprentices", "The Drapery Falls", and "The Baying of the Hounds". My neck started to hurt from headbanging when they were done playing :haha:.

DT went on last, at around 10:15 PM. I was able to recognize every song within the first five seconds of each one. So here's the setlist:

1. Intro: Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey or something like that :haha:
2. In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 1
3. Beyond This Life :headbang:
4. Misunderstood
5. Forsaken
6. Never Enough
7. Erotomania
8. Voices :headbang:
9. The Ministry of Lost Souls
10. "The Dark Nintendo Night": This was a shortened version of "The Dark Eternal Night" played over the PA system while a DT themed version of Mario played in sync to the music on a large movie screen. If that makes any sense at all.
11. Metropolis/Learning to Live/A Change of Seasons medley: Jordan broke out the keytar on an extended version of the middle instrumental section of Metropolis. I normally hate medleys, especially as the closing song, but this was absolute pwnage! :headbang:

Overall, this night was pwnage. It was all assigned seating, so that meant no moshing. The place was quite large, and the stage was a decent size. The only band that looked kind of cramped on stage was Opeth, but that's because they had so much on-stage gear. As for souvenirs, I got a DT Systematic Chaos shirt.

30 Things I Hate, and 36 Things I Love

Current mood: contemplative

PARENTAL ADVISORY: This blog contains strong adult language. Viewer discretion advised. :haha:

HATE:

1. Feeling helpless (like when I heard 2 dogs fighting down the street, but I couldn't do anything about it).
2. Andrew.
3. Niko.
4. Rian.
5. People who think they're gangster, but I know that if they walked into Compton they'd get shot so fast they wouldn't even get to say "Wassup wit it ma niggaz?".
6. People who think they're skaters, when they're really not.
7. Being alone.
8. When a girl says, "I'll call you back", and she never does.
9. Dogfighting.
10. Rap that is really dirty. So yeah, most rap :haha:
11. People who've heard "Stairway to Heaven" and think they're hardcore Zeppelin fans.
12. The way certain girls are so goddamn complicated.
13. People who talk shit behind other's backs.
14. People who pretend to be stoners.
15. Hardcore porn (the most disgusting shit I've ever seen, especially teh butt secks. That's an out-hole, not an in-hole!).
16. 2 Girls 1 Cup :haha:
17. Shitty music (which is most stuff nowadays).
18. People who are overly gay... please shut the fuck up now Chris Crocker.
19. All homework.
20. People who lie.
21. People who think they're better than you when they're really insecure little shithead fucks who can't do a thing to back up the shit they talk about you.
22. Bugs. I really have deep hatred for spiders, and all other bugs. I have a dead bug collection in my closet from when I was like 8 that scares the shit out of me.
23. Bands that get classified as mathcore just because they use weird chords and maybe play in 5/4 time for like one measure of a song. Try playing 13/8 for an entire 7 minute song, bitches!
24. The word faggot. Except for when I use it :haha:
25. Chris Crocker and Jeffree Star.
26. School. If I had one wish in this world, it would be for no school anymore.
27. Excessive swearing. Except for when I'm in a shitty mood, then bring it on Corey Taylor :haha:
28. Getting picked on. It happens to me occasionally, most of the time by three guys at my school who really have it out for me for some reason.
29. Looking stupid, especially in front of my friends or family.
30. Getting yelled at.

LOVE:

1. Family.
2. Friends (that are true, and won't turn on you).
3. Music.
4. Playing guitar.
5. Star Wars :headbang:.
6. Dane Cook.
7. Dream Theater.
8. Buckethead.
9. Ice-cream.
10. Between the Buried and Me.
11. Tool (the band!).
12. Slipknot (all 9 members!).
13. Lord of the Rings :headbang:.
14. The word "fuck".
15. The word "gaylord" (I'm not a homophobe, I just love this word).
16. The phrase "fuck you, gaylord". You can't top it.
17. Pizza.
18. Burgers.
19. Fries.
20. Legos :headbang:.
21. Staying up late.
22. Wikipedia :headbang:.
23. Weekends, breaks are even better.
24. Playing video games.
25. Recording music (but it's also really stressful).
26. Detuning my guitars.
27. Playing in a weird time signature.
28. Finding something I couldn't find for hella long.
29. Discovering a new band.
30. Hockey!
31. Making that one really pretty girl in my class laugh. It's just so satisfying :)
32. Watching movies.
33. Feeling completely satisfied with everything. This doesn't happen very often (mostly during the summer), but when it does, it's better than anything :)
34. Listening to music that brings backs some serious memories (like the band Yes for example).
35. Learning a song that is technically challenging, but once you get it down, it sounds great (this would have to be one of the countless Dream Theater songs I've learned).
36. Pinch-harmonics. I do one, just one every morning to determine my day. If it sounds like the one done by Michael Romeo in "Evolution (The Grand Design)" by Symphony X, it's gonna be a good day! If it sounds like a dying possum, it's gonna be a shitty day :haha:

Weird Phone Call I Got The Other Day

Current mood: Happy

I was spending the night at my friend's house the other day, when at about 11:45 PM my phone rang. I answered it, and said "Hello?" The person's response was: "Hello!" I kind of looked at my cell phone, then said "Who is this?" The answer was, "Your neighbor!" Ok, first of all, none of my neighbors know my cell phone number, and none of them have this guy's particular voice. So I say, "What's your name?" The person responded with: "...your neighbor!" I say: "Yeah? Which one, asshole?" He hangs up.

Around 11:55, he calls again. This time, things got really fuckin' weird. We go through the same "Who are you, what's your name" routine, and he only responds with "Your neighbor!" But then, when I ask him what street he lives on, he says to me: "You stole my newspaper man! I don't know what the fuck you're thinking of, but I've had enough! Every day you take my newspapers before I can get them!" There's a long pause, then I say to him: "Alright, listen up, gaylord: I don't steal people's fuckin' newspapers! I've never stolen someone's newspaper in my life! Quit calling!" So he decides to respond with: "I'm coming to get you! I'm leaving right now. Leave your door unlocked kid, I'm gonna get you!" So I just say: "Bullshit, asshole!" He hangs up.

About 5 minutes later, he attempted calling again. I picked it up, but there was no answer. The guy never came to my friend's house to "get me". He hasn't called me since.

The Buckethead Show

Current mood: Very Tired

Okay, so my first impression when I got there was, "Wow, this place is tiny! And no seating?" At about 9:05, his opening act went on, and played until about 9:50. The opener was a local guy named Kid Beyond, and he's a beatboxer/singer. His show was very interesting, but a little repetative and overall had way too much bass.

Around 10:10, the stagehands (there wasn't much of a stage, but whatever) starting setting up Bucket's gear, and turned everything on. Bucket came on at about 10:20. He was wearing a black trench coat, a plain white bucket, his mask, and was playing his white Gibson Les Paul. The setlist was as follows:

1. Night of the Slunk
2. Transmutation
3. He played what sounded like a 10 minute jam on Voodoo Child
4. Jordan (complete with a modified version of the Guitar Hero II solo)
5. He then did the robot and played with his nunchuks for about 2 minutes
6. Arc of the Pendulum

7. Ghost Host
8. Soothsayer w/extended guitar solo (best song of the night)
9. Fountains of the Forgotten
10. Asylum of Glass
11. Turbine
12. He gave out toys for about 5 minutes
13. Him and the beatboxer jammed for about 15 minutes
14. Hook & Pole Gang
15. Last Ride of the Bozomobile (extended)

Then he did the fake ending, and came back for his encore:

16. Park Theme w/extended solo

I was about 30 feet away from him the whole time. It was an insane show! There were about 3 additional songs that he played scattered throughout the show that I didn't recognize, so I didn't list them on here. His entire show was about an hour and 40 minutes long.

Souvenir wise, I bought a shirt. I'll have a picture up of me wearing it in a little bit. Also, I now have pictures of the show up in my pictures section.
