A good argument, but the thing is the carpenter will offer a fair price based on what he expects a consumer to pay for his work. That is, the consumer by buying the commodity agrees that it is worth that much and decides the price.
In a diffferent context, if everyone in the world were to suddenly decide CDs were £5 to expensive, and refuse to buy them until they were cheaper, they would become £5 cheaper (ignoring the fact that most record companies etc would probably not have enough working profit to produce anymore)
Unrealistic, but it is how it works. The consumer really does decide the price.
Thought there would be more chance of a reply if I posted here rather than in that news article.
