Why shouldnt guitarists get screwed for using distortion, reverb,
chorus, delay, wah, phaser, flanger, yada yada yada yada. Sure, if you
have a decent tube amp you get natural distortion, so it isnt really an
effect. Play on, then?
Does that mean that I cant use distortion if I dont have a tube amp? Huh? HUH?
Well, Im a really huge distortion maniac, but ill be playing the devils advocate here.
If we can use distortion and all the shit loads of effects, get our
tracks EQ'ed and double tracked to death, why shouldnt vocalists be
allowed to use their beloved auto tune? Seriously? Because it isnt
natural? Well my processor and your pedal chain isnt either.
"Yeah, well I would be able to use distortion if I had a good amp. Not my fault I cant afford it"
"Yeah, well I would be able to sing well if I had good vocal control. Not my fault I dont"
Seriously. I just realised how stupid it was for me to hate auto tune. But I still hate it. Confusing as shit.
Sorry. SAT class taking it toll really late, I guess :P
Auto tune is like effects ..it should be used as an aide to help take the piece further..but as with everything in life people abuse it...I have noticed some vocalists can not sing live without auto tune..we can play guitar on an acoustic...unplugged..which is a good test of our art...to hear someone who can sing straight out of the box is a pleasure...peace
Auto tune and effects are not the same thing at all. Auto tune fixes the pitch. Effects just layer on top of a guitars natural sound to give it a kick. Besides, vocal control isn't really THAT hard to obtain. You just have to find out what your voice type is. Baritone? Tenor? Soprano? Notice I left out Bass, and that's because bass lead singers are as odd as a bass lead guitarist.
Besides, like kr46 said, we can play guitar acoustic around a campfire and streetcorners. You can't take Auto-tune with you wherever you go.
