Andrewbiles wrote on Dec 18th, 2008 3:46pmUnlucky with the X-box. Typical these things break just when you get something new for them or when you're trying to get it working properly.
Heard quite a lot of stories about them dying. Does it mean they're completely dead or are they fixable? Right pain if that's the end of it, people must be going mad.
Would have thought more people would be interested in a more open submission idea for your zine. I guess people like boundaries. Got to blame high school for that, don't remember them ever setting open essays where you have to come up with the ideas. Should make it a more interesting read though if it's not just covering one thing.
Best of luck with getting that sorted.
I'm sure Christmas will be fine, it just lacks the same excitement it had 10/15 years ago. Might have to get the old Scalextric set out and get in the way - if it's still around and working. quote |
Andrewbiles wrote on Dec 14th, 2008 11:43pmApologies for the insanely slow response.
Sounds like you're off to a flier with the zine. Managed to get a lot of people in on it?
Are you going to include images/art as well as writing and reviews?
Definitely a nice little project to be doing, especially as you want to write more professionally, it could be a good boost.
Same as you with regards to Christmas. There's only going to be five of us, all unreligous. Will also be strange without a dog to break up the monotony of seeing drunken parents scared of the turkey flying out of the oven. Don't really like turkey (too dry) either. Don't really know why we bother... Would rather go skiing or something. quote |
Andrewbiles wrote on Dec 6th, 2008 3:30pmHey Rob, be sure to tell me if your zine gets done, I'll buy a copy from you. Sounded pretty positive from the post in the hardcore forum.
How's everything going at the moment?

No they didn't play Torbay but they did play Plymouth, I travelled from near Lands End to see them this time round, they were awesome. quote |
reelbigfish432 wrote on Oct 27th, 2008 11:35amCheers for the rating, very kind of you .
I notice ou live in torbay, did you see Reuben on their TwoByThree tour per chance? quote |
Andrewbiles wrote on Sep 27th, 2008 3:22amYeah that's a good point. You need to find a decent website to just list the stuff and hope someone takes a punt for a couple of quid.
There may be some people with saved searches, but if they're local bands it would definitely be very lucky to find someone who happened to want them. The car boot sale is probably best for those types of releases and hope that their old school mates pop by your stall.
Good to know I'm stuck with Aqua and R Kelly for life quote |
Andrewbiles wrote on Sep 21st, 2008 7:16pmkryptonite22 wrote on Sep 20th, 2008 at 11:24am : yeah shit i bought some awful music when i was younger. mostly it was bad religiom, the offspring, that kind of thing |
Haha. Bad Religion and the Offspring have survived pretty well at least.
I hate to think what's in the bowels of my collection. I know there are singles by Aqua and R Kelly in there somewhere so I can't imagine what has been suppressed!
I don't think starting a venue would be too hard, just got to be on the ball with the bands, be in a decent spot and know how to market the events well. The biggest problem would be finding a good area that hasn't already got half a dozen live venues already.

maybe i should look for a postgrad course somewhere, just so my degree wasnt a total waste of time haha. |

Blimey. I thought Slipknot was bad :P
You've got to haggle at car boot sales (watched too much daytime tv!), but at the end of the day if you're happy to let things go for a price and it actually gets rid of them then getting something is better than nothing.
Maybe you should find a local venue and ask if you could maybe try booking some gigs for them? Then get interviews and stuff with bands that come your way and then create a zine followed by a label release?
Don't know how well zines sell, but if you had them available at gigs you put on people would no doubt buy them.
Nice idea to one day own a live venue. Good luck with that one. quote |

Andrewbiles wrote on Sep 19th, 2008 1:47pmCar boot sales, that's a great idea!
Cuts out all the fees and possibly gets you a red forehead.
Haven't been to one in years.
Did you feel bad selling punk stuff to primary school kids?
There are books out there for starting labels, but really if you're just going to be doing small stuff you don't really need them. All the ones I have picked up start off by saying, "get a lawyer" or "get well written contracts" - ie, spend more money than you're ever going to make. You'd get much better info from somewhere like Collective Zine's forum and possibly 'All you need to know about the music business' by Donald Passman - that was my fall back book at Uni. quote |

yeah i keep thinking id love to get a label or something going but i dont think south devons the place to do it.
yeah ebays brilliant aside from all the fees, also been selling loads of old cds and dvds i never really use anymore, i dunno just going through a phase of cutting down on things really. not for finance reasons as such, more for just only wanting to keep hold of what i like, y'know? |
No reason why not...
If you can find the music around you (or make it yourself) then there will probably be a market for it somewhere.
Probably a sensible idea clearing out some stuff. Are you finding you don't get much money for the CDs? After all the ebay fees, paypal fees and postage costs... Bought a DVD for £1.99 on ebay the other day, can't imagine the seller ended up with much change out of that.

yeah im the same i take pictures of things rather than people. also take pictures of my dogs haha.
i did journalism and film at uni, people always kind of assume i wanted to go into news but i dunno, i just love to write more than anything so yeah.
what kinds of things do you draw? |
that sounds sweet i was looking at maybe doing photo journalism but then i figured it was too much like illustration, but that you have to sum up a story withy photos..so i was like ARRGHHHHHH no im not doing that all over again
we have to do Sequential Image Making...basically something like a cartoon strip, but they gave us a stupid topic last time like "boarders and boundries"
then we had to do a childrens book last term which was ok
and printing which i LOVE but everytime i go up there SOMETHING always goes wrong and i have to get my prints done in like the last week and they end up looking like shit ¬¬

what kind of art do you do, like hand drawn? im kind of getting into photography too i often think maybe i should go do a course or something. |
ah yeah i was gonna say that means you must have just finished.
i looked at cardiff for my course but i didnt like hte building much
]what was it you were studying?
yeah i do han drawn stuff..i hate my course though coz i dont get to do like my own style with my projects and it always lets me down ¬¬
i wish i had actually done photography from the start, id just love to be able to travel and take photos, i just love being out there and being able to take them...i prefer taking nature ones though to portrait

Andrewbiles wrote on Sep 15th, 2008 10:19pmGood ol' ebay.
I love the fact you can buy things on there just a couple of months late and they're half the price (unless it's limited stuff, then you're unlucky and paying twice the price).
The label didn't really get going. Just kept noticing that there were more and more labels by the day, so if I get back on the idea I'll start it off with something of my own creation and see how it goes. Have had an extensive plan in my head for ages but just can't afford to put it all together. As is life.
Went to the Boduf Songs website the other day and found there's an album coming out on Kranky in a weeks time! Apparently released on a label over here as well but it's twice the price... quote |

ah yeah but to be fair a lot of the people there probably deserve a bit of bitchiness from time to time. im good thanks, what uni are you at? wish i was still there, a lot of the kids from round here are just starting this week, makes me feel old and all nostalgic |
how old are you?
tbh im young for uni
its complicated but with art courses most kids after they leave school have to do a foundations year
but i left school at 16 and went to an art colelge...so i was techniqually ahead of them.
im at the university of derby atm gonna finish my last year
then im going back again to another uni )dunno which one yet) to do photography
sorry if i already told you most of this

nah well i went to europe last year obviously but nothing since then as much as id like to. believe it or not i have almost exactly the same amount of money now as i did when i got back from europe last december haha. what about you what are you up to right now? |
Haha, sounds like the Chuckle Brothers version of the money programme. "To my pocket; to your pocket".
Ok, that was bad, I blame it on the time.
Do hate that about money, it disappears so easily and before you know it you're back to square one.
Not much happening in this neck of the woods.
Selling a few bits and pieces I don't want any more to make a bit of money here and there but it's not enough to fly me around the world in 5 star luxury.
