Ill start off by saying that my blog from August 10, 2007 where I said I would have a new song recorded within a month was quite incorrect. It's been almost 3 years and I still haven't written and recorded a FULL song since Cough Drop Overdose. I've recorded some solos and sections of songs, but I'm not counting those. This challenge should help me finally get the ball rolling and give me something to remember from my summer before college!
June 30/July 1
Due to differences in local time and the time that the competition is being held by, I'm combining these days into one. It's also worth noting to myself that I'm playing in D Standard. I came up with the main verse progression, prechorus progression, and a rough chorus progression for a song. It sounds kind of dreamy/reminiscing, and I have a great idea for it that I've been mulling over for quite some time, which I will address tomorrow.
Today I discovered what kept me from completing a whole song during the past 3 years: I've been too caught up with including certain ideas and techniques into songs. Things like, "I want to put a sweep here. I want to do a long legato sequence here. I want to put something funky and danceable here." I really should just do what is best for the music instead of trying to force certain things into it. Who cares if it's simple/complex? I'll be much happier in the end knowing I did what was better for the music instead of trying to prove to myself that I could fit certain things into certain pieces.
I started working on lyrics for the song, which I've decided to call Song of Time. I tried to tease the Song of Time from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but it didn't work out The song is about how music can take you to another place on the time axis. When I listen to some songs that I first heard last summer, I remember that summer even though the songs' subject matters have nothing to do with that summer at all. It's a pretty interesting concept to me. The verses all reference Phish songs and song titles (think Victory - Megadeth) because of the fact that last summer I started listening to a lot of Phish, and whenever I hear the albums Billy Breathes, Junta, or A Picture of Nectar, I feel a strange nostalgia.
EDIT: Yay! The lyrics are done! It's only two verses, a one-line prechorus, and a chorus though. Hey, I haven't written a song in years--I may as well start simple, right?
I got my chinchilla on Saturday. She's 7 months old. Yep, still a young one. Whenever I let her out of her cage, she doesn't want to go back in until I carry her back in her dust bath I should get one of those little pens so I don't have to worry about her running around the house like a maniac. She has no name yet and poos a lot. I'll get pics of her when she's settled in completely if you wish.
I have hand full of riffs, licks, and chord progressions to work with on a new song. I know I'll have to scrap some eventually, though.
Summer is coming to an end and I still have to finish reading A Gathering of Old Men. Hopefully, I can get through it today.
Until next time...
EDIT: I just realized that I put "pubic" instead of "public" haha.
Thank you zappp and team! You guys kick ass! Like someone else said, this seems Myspacey, but should be fun haha.
Well, if you haven't checked it out, check it out. It's called Cough Drop Overdose and I wrote it last year or a year and a half ago, and recorded it last February. It's nice to be able to record stuff and track your progress. It really cool to listen to it again. Since then, my ability has improved somewhat, and I've been writing some new material. It seems to take me forever to finish a song :D
I'll be recording soon. If you're interested, expect a new song within a month!
