Bass. Bass can be as much of a lead and melody instrument as you make of it. Look at Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, Victor Wooten, etc. If that is what you find more fun, you should go for it. If you are good, ask your fellow bandmates if you can have more soloes and fills. If you want bass to be more challenging, learn more challenging songs. Many songs are both beautiful and challenging as soloes, combining what are apparently both your problems with bass. Try Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) by Cliff Burton for a crowd pleasing (and impressive sounding) bass solo, or, for more classical sensibilities, Cello Suite No. 1 By Bach http://www.911tabs.com/link/?3950082.
