the question came up in the papers recently so i thought i would say somthing on it for kicks and giggles... lol
Is it a good idea to ban smoking in public places? Or is banning public smoking an infringement on our rights? Michigan is one of only seven states that isn't covered by a no smoking law of some kind. Over 50% of Americans are covered in some way by a no smoking act or law. Personally I am not a smoker, but I do believe the government should stay out of the peoples way as much as possible, smoking included. I think it should be up to the property owner whether or not he or she will allow smoking or not, whether it is a bar, pool hall or bowling ally it should be up to the property owner, not the local government. If you think about it, yes it is a "public" place but, its still private property, and on that property the owner should be able to make the rules. If you don't like smoke then just don't go there. It's that simple, yes it's kind of mean, rude and unthoughtful of me, but it's the truth. Say a patron attends a resturant where smokers are present. He is offended by the odor and drafts a petition to make the restaurant smoke free. If the owner obliges, he can lose a large amount of profits. A high percentage of people in bars are smokers. How long can a bar owner keep a customer there if all the customer wants is a cigarette but cant? Then should you put him practicaly out of business just cause you want to go there too without smelling like smoke? To say that no one in that city or township can smoke in public is pretty communistic if you ask me. Controling the public in a very real sense is Socialism and Communism, step by step our freedoms are walking away, to protect us all from ourselves.
Up here we have a no smoking inside restaurants and public buildings law
I would say it's a good thing
Definitely keeping cancer rates down
and it discourages smoking, which kills people, so I'm cool with it.
It's when they ban drinking that I'll be upset. And I don't even drink.
