hey!

so I finally got around to changing the cap position in my circuit - and guess what, it didn't do anything I'm gonna try again tomorrow because I couldn't really play at a decent volume today and see if that changes anything. I will contact the pot sellers again, definitely, and kick their butts for not replying to me. It's got to be the pots, I can't see what else could be wrong

Yeah, it's gotta be the pots because I even put them in my guitar and found that they did just fine in the taper department. Over the last 6months lots of people have been having lots of trouble with CTS pots! I did contact the company you ordered your pots from on your behalf and never got a reply. I'd kinda hoped they got back to you and bypassed saying anything to me. :(

Yeah, I doubt you fried 4 pots too. With any luck it'll be the way you have your cap wired. What you could do is disconnect the tone pots altogether and see what happens then. That'll be easier than rewiring just to find out that it wasn't the problem.

Who did you get the pots from? As a dealer I might be able to have word with them is any of them speak English.

Also, low wattage iron are actually more likely to damage a pot than a high wattage iron. Low wattage irons mean you have apply heat for longer giving the pot more time to cook the inside. If you have to hold the iron on the pot for more than about 5 seconds then your iron isn't hot enough and you risk damage to the pot.

Well, I couldn't wait (as you might have imagined?) and put them in today. Well, the output did change. My amp is loud now, I have no clue why, but before I could play it at 7 (out of 12) even on the High Input without problems. Now I have to turn down to 4:P - not that I can complain:haha
It still does that 10 all 9 nothing thing, but I have yet to change the tone cap so that it goes to ground and doesn't connect the pots, I'll try that next!

So are you happy with the tone after the fix?

In terms of the tapper I'm really hoping that moving around the tone cap will help. Because I put the pickups in my guitar and tested the taper and can be confident it's not the pickups which again makes me suspect the pots. Do you know how hot your soldering iron is when you are putting the pickups in? Perhaps the pots are overheating and damaging the carbon trace which ultimately throws your taper off.

hey, the pickups got here fine today! I'll be putting them in tomorrow though, since I have studying to do - test tomorrow. I'll let you know!

Nice design on those cards by the way!

Cool

If the tone or output did change noticeably on the bridge then remember you can send it back for a rewind and I'll refund your postage.

hey, really like the song! Very Zep;-)
I thought it was The Ocean at first:haha
I actually took a look at how that was played today. Man, that's a weird riff! it was awkward to play, haha. sounds super cool, though.

Just a quick update: I have found my tone I just need to get the pots fixed - they haven't replied yet

One thing though: my bridge pickup is considerably quieter than the neck even when its closer to the strings - any way to fix that?

The alnico 4 magnet in your bridge pickups has significantly less magnetic pull than the alnico 2 magnet in your neck so you will need to have the bridge pickup quite a bit closer to the strings in order to get similar output. I did wind your bridge pickups about 20% more than your neck so you should be able to get the volume pretty close to balanced but you will need to have the bridge quite close to the strings.

Hey Chris! Did you get around shipping my pickups on monday? Just wondering when I should be expecting them

Yes, I did. Shipping to Germany typically takes 3 to 5 days so you should have them very soon.

dude, whats the song you're playing in the pro co rat demo?

i cant figure it out:haha

sounds good!
It starts off with a bit of Led Zeppelins' "Bring it on Home" and then changes to "Susie Q", popularized by CCR. Thanks!
