Morley Power Wah

I tried one for the second time today, this time with my Fulltone Bass Drive present as well.

It is really a situation of so close, yet so far as to how I want a wah to sound.

When I ran the wah behind the distortion, when I played lower down the neck, especially on the low B, I could get a great sound. Think of the distorted Wah in "The Pot" by Tool. When I played with the wah first, I could get some nice wahing midrange tones.

But other than imitating The Pot, I could not find a use for the pedal. My Q-tron and some subtle dynamic control gets closer the the "Calm Like a Bomb" wah sound than thism and this pedal didn't even get close to those screaming Cliff Burton sounds. And he used an older Morley power wah boost.

The range on the pedal just felt to small. In the middle of moving my foot there was a gret section of really dramamtic sweep, but for what felt like a third of the the sweep on either side, it had no more effect. It just left me wishing I could "push" the wah even firther in both directions.

Now, it sounded good, but it has left me truely confused as to what wahs I sould be looking at. The bass wah market doesn't seem to cater for those metal wah sounds, just every funk wah sound you could wish for. Back to the drawing board...

GAS, how we love and hate it.

GAS is a particular enemy of mine. For those who don't know what it means, it stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. In general, lusting after gear even though it isn't necessary.

I am very fond of tone and experimenting with effects. I am not the sort of person to spend hours getting their EQ just right (as of now, I actually leave it flat). However, I like to enjoy the noise I make when I play.

Naturally, this is leading me on a slippery slope to bankruptcy.

As of now, my rig is a Warwick Corvette Standard 5 string (with ebony fretboard) into a Q-tron Plus, a Fulltone bassdrive and then finally into a Warwick Sweet 15.1.

However, that is just not enough. In order of priority, here are the items currently attracting my GAS.

1)Morley Power Wah Boost, one of the old vintage models. I have yet to try one myself (due to the difficultly of finding a pedal 30 years out of production in my area). However, all the demos of it I hear are good. The massive sweep range mean that (supposedly) keeping the toe up a bit will retain a decent amount of low end, and the problem of low end when using it like Cliff should be solved with another item on the list. Essentially, a really aggressive wah that should be able to get those screams in the treble end and 'roars' in the bassiers areas (like in Calm Like a Bomb. The only trouble I see with the crybaby bass is the lack of the ability to really get those screams out of it. Still, I will try all I can find, using a modern Morley Power Wah to determine if I should go for the boost).

2)Guyatone VT-X Vintage Tremolo. Again, no personal testing, but all use in bands and in demos of it, it has sounded great. I feel it would be a great way to add atmosphere to slower lines, and bring a new dimension to just letting stuff ring out. Also planning to put it in front of my Q-tron plus, which should get some awesome sounds.

3)Barge Concepts Feedback/Looper. Essentially, a blend pedal for the entire effects chain, and I can use it to feedback the signal into the effects as well. Again, should get some incredible sounds from this, as well os the practicality of having a clean signal under the effected signal. Oh, also functions as a true bypass looper, which is nice for turning off and on the entire signal chain at once.

4)New amp, looking at one for life, so expensive. This is way off, but it can't stop me gazing at those Genz Benz's and GKs lustfully.

And that is what I feel I 'need' to get at some point. Oh, and a power supply for the effects chain.

On top of that, a few more exotic effects and a 6 string fretless Thumb NT would be nice.

It may take years to get this stuff, but the trouble is, I can see this having applications in the music I make, and seeing as music is the only decent hobby I have, it pushes its way up the priorities. I'll probably end up as a 40 year old bedroom (bass) shreader with one of the nicest rigs around, that only I hear.

I either need to get a really good job, or learn to control myself some day.

On a side note, I may start using blogs to do some gear reviews, in a vain hope it makes someone jealous.
