I think I have to disagree. I mean of course anyone who's labeled as "the greatest" can easily be called overrated because, well...technically they are. But personally, I don't believe there's very many guitarists who have the full package Jimi had.
Just pick a song...Let's say - Little Wing, or Castles Made of Sand...Try to play it perfectly. Not impossible, right? But then try to sing along while you play it. I don't know of another guitarist that can make up such complex rhythms <i>while</i> singing. Not to mention the fact that he's usually improvising while he's singing live.
But of course that's why its called the greatest in <u>your</u> opinion. I just thought I'd give you a real blog comment. =]
