How Good Do You Have To Be To Start A Band?

Current mood: curious

So I got my first guitar last Christmas and I've been really dedicated to it; I play at least an hour and a half a day.
I would say I'm making a decent amount of progress considering I've only been playing for under a year.

It would seem I have the people to start a band, my friend is a great drummer and my brother recently took up bass.

Not that I'm planning to start a band anytime soon,
but I'm curious . . . how good do you have to be to be able to start a band?

What/how much do I need to learn?

How many years should I play first?

What do I need to be able to play?

You basically just have to know how to make noise, and to enjoy the noise you make. It's not about the fans, it's about the band. It's not about the popularity; popularity ruins music. Enjoy your garage, invite your overly critical friends, and love the hell out of what you're doing. Find a couple other friends who want to do the same thing, and play whatever the hell you want. Most important rule: be creative. Second most important rule: shove a big middle finger up the ass of anyone who doesn't like what you do; you like what you do, that's what's important.

If, in the event people do like your music, and you want to expand, popularitywise, just make sure you stay humble and never compromise for some fucker who says he can't market what you play. Never change your style for somebody else.
