Chapter 1

I

-I... I think he's dead- Alex muttered, in a distressed tone.

-Are you sure? - The man next to him inquired.

He was pretty sure. After all, not many people survive a fall like that, especially after being shot seven times and stabbed a couple more, for good measure. But he didn't want to risk being wrong.

-Well, I poked him once, but I'm not exactly sure.

-Then poke him again, for crying out loud!

-...

-Okay, he's dead.

-All right, let's get going then. We don't want anyone sneaking up on us like this.

-But, what about the body? - Alex asked incredulously.

-We’ll leave it here. - the man answered confidently. - It's not like anyone is gonna trace it back to us, am I right?

-Yeah, I suppose you are...

It was not a good idea to argue with him, Alex thought. After all, he's (supposedly) done this a couple of times before, and he just looks like the kind of guy that murders people on a regular basis and gets away with it. Hell, he'd probably take that last comment as a compliment.

-C'mon, let's get out of here. The cops will arrive at any minute now.

They ran towards the car, which was parked a couple of blocks away. It's funny how 'a couple of blocks' suddenly turns into 'the entire surface of the Earth ' when running away from a crime scene, Alex thought, his legs about to crumble from exhaustion.

-Hurry the fuck up! - The man shouted at Alex, visibly concerned.

Alex opened the door and let himself fall on the backseat. It was over... It was finally over...

-Get off the back seat, you retard! We have a body to stuff in there!

-Wait, I thought we were leaving the body!

-Yeah, about that... we aren't.

-What the fuck do you mean we ar- Alex suddenly remembered. He couldn't believe how it slipped past them both back there. They had to get the body, and presto.

With what little strength he had left, Alex lifted himself up and sat on the passenger seat. The car immediately started, and he felt a sudden rush, like he had suddenly realized that this was the last step, that this was the only thing left to do.

-Let's do this- he said firmly.

The car stopped right at the entrance of the building, just where the body was. It relieved them to see that it was still there, as if they somehow believed that someone might steal it or something. They jumped out of the car, and proceeded to pick up the body.

-Fuck me, he's heavy- Alex grunted.

-And what the fuck did you expect? He's not exactly in top shape...- The man responded.

-I don't know... this looks a lot easier in the movies...

After struggling for a couple of minutes, they managed to get the body on the backseat. Alex and his partner got on the driver and passenger seats respectively. Alex was starting to wonder about their next course of action. They were near the coast, so that seemed like the best place to drop the body at. On the other hand, they had to be sure that the body was never discovered, and throwing it into the ocean didn’t seem like the safest way to ensure that. The other possibility was that-

-We’re burning him- said the man, interrupting Alex’s thought process.

-We’re burning him - he repeated - along with the car.

-Wh-what do you mean 'along with the car'?

-I meant exactly that. We're burning the body, and we're burning the god damned car as well. You never know how the police can trace you; this car is evidence, and it needs to disappear.

Alex sighed. He was way too tired to argue with him. Plus, that car was a piece of junk anyway. But then, he remembered.

-Wait, but if we’re burning the body, then what abou- before Alex could finish, he was interrupted. He heard a sound the distance, a sound that was getting closer and louder alarmingly quickly. A very recognizable sound, and the very last thing they wanted to hear right now.

-Is… Is that a police siren? – Alex asked, as if he hadn’t already figured that out.

-Don’t panic, there’s nothing to worry about.

-Are you fucking kidding me?! There’s a motherfucking dead body in our back seat!  It’s not even in the trunk, for Christ’s sake! WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE GOING TO DO?!

-I told you not to panic. Everything’s under control.

It wasn’t. Upon looking at the man in the eyes, Alex saw something. He saw fear. He saw that look one has while trying to trick oneself into thinking that everything’s going to be all right, but deep inside knows that things are far from being fucking all right. He then came to a horrid realization…

-You’ve never done anything like this before, have you?

The man froze. Suddenly, all of his confidence seemed to dissipate, revealing someone who, clearly, didn’t have a fucking idea of what he was doing.

-I… well… no, not exactly. What you’ve been told about me… well, it’s not really… true, for the most part. - He said in a monotone, almost defeated tone of voice.

Alex froze as well. The only man who he thought knew how to handle a situation like this turned out to be some random idiot who’s deluded himself into thinking he’s a trained assassin. Things weren’t looking good for them. He wished to retrace his steps and prevent all of this from happening. He remembered how it all started…
