Stop referring to these bands as Metalcore. Metalcore has hardcore influences. All of the bands you listed are just metal bands with a large dose of melody.

ahh sorry man.
I categorized them all as Metal before in my university's metal club and people bashed me for calling these bands metal band. They said hardcore is not Metal :(

That's because there aren't any music files actually uploaded to the tracks. However, when my gpu comes in the mail this coming week, my new desktop (which has the processing power to do what I need it to do, recording-wise) will be running. So, expect some tracks soon.
Alright. Let me know. I'll probably miss out on it when they do come up what with loads of bandcamps and stuff.

I can't play any of the tracks on your Bandcamp.

May I ask what a Bebop II-V line is? I saw you mention them in the "II-V line" lesson on the front page.

Sorry it took me so long! Bebop is a style of jazz thats characterized by fast tempos, complex harmonic substitutions and heavy use of chromaticism. So. . . a bebop II-V is a line that incorporates those elements into outlining the ii and V chords. A bebop II-V may outline the tritone sub of the V chord or other subs to fit into the style the era. A great example is the B section to Charlie Parker's aptly named 'Bebop.' In fact many of Parkers B sections are considered classic example of Bebop II-V's

You're making the argument that genres are subjective, when they're not.

Music is one of the most subjective thing in this world dude. I'm willing to bet if you you posted the definition of Metal and the definition of Rock/Hard Rock/Prog Rock, Dream Theater would apply to all of those. If genres are NOT subjective as you stated, DT should only be able to fit into one of those categories.

Strictly Metal? No. But Prog isn't about "strictly" anything. Also, why exactly can't Metal bands write songs like "This is the Life"? Is that a rule or something, that Metal bands can't write beautiful songs? I guess we should tell Metal bands that they can't write ballad-like songs...
Also, I agree I shouldn't have used the word Never about Metal and Ballads. I wouldn't have a problem with a Metal band writing a ballad, Killswitch even has one on their new album, but you probably have KSE categoriezed as some other genre so that probably doesn't count right?

You are obviously a lot more hung up on categorizing music than I am. You can call Dream Theater "Country" music, and it still wouldn't sound any different than it does if you call it "Rock/Metal." Would I ever call Dream Theater a Metal band? No, and netiher would any of my friends who have listened and attended their concerts since the early 90's when I asked them that very question. Does that make your opinion to call them Metal wrong? No. Does that make our opinion that they aren't a Metal band wrong? No. It means we have different opinions.

If you don't think Dream Theater is Prog Metal, then you really need to listen to more Prog Metal and get a better feel for the genre. Just because, on the whole, DT isn't as heavy as some bands, that doesn't make them Prog Rock.

I'm good with prog metal, and honestly I avoid generalizing bands in the first place because I think it's unnecessary. Music is music, regardless of what category someone places it in. For myself I think calling them a strictly metal band is a bit misleading because you would never hear beautiful songs like This is the Life on an album from a band I would classify Metal, but to each his own. I actually liked seeing so many people coming to DT defense as if I was bashing them, which wasn't the case but whatever.
