To continue from that last comment. A lot of the high quality of my recordings comes from having high quality plugins and knowing how to fucking use them.
Stuff like knowing just what to do with EQ comes with time. I've been at it for almost 2 years, I know my way around a parametric EQ better than I know my way around my house.
1k is nasal, everything below 100hz is mud and boom, 16khz and above is pretty much useless.
also, for bass instruments, dip the midrange plenty (500hz to 4k or so) because for the kick drum, bass guitar, whatever, its just not needed. it takes up frequency space that guitar and vocals need. EQ everything like a jigsaw, try and make it so nothing overlaps, or as little as possible. of course some instruments will share points of power in eq (bass instruments have a lot of power around 100-200hz) and points of harshness, so just make sure stuff around there is controlled and it's all gravy. quote |

Drums are all programmed usually. Gonna start recording real drums for stuff soon though.
I use XLN Audio Addictive Drums to do my drums, for the old EP mix test it was accoustica beatcraft with DFH1 samples. I won't even go into how much work I did to those drums to get them sounding big.
guitar tone is hit and miss. EP mix test was pod xt. i did that mix last august or so, but the source files are from Nov 06. i use a peavey 5150mkII now (with a framus 2x12 cab with celestion V30 speakers in it) and my guitar tones are a lot more hit and miss now. schecter of metal, for example, the guitars are totally raw, no eq, no compression, nothing. but a lot of the time i get fizz city. it's a very tricky amp to work with. the bias range being so tiny doesn't help (i think the maximum my amp allows me is something like 19mA, your typical marshall or fender is around 45mA) and it's still in crossover distortion. Modding the bias range helps it or fixes, so I'll probably do it soon.
