Lol cool! I've just got a cheap set, DXP Pioneer series, a good starter kit. Approxametly $500 or a bit less. Only problem, you'll have to get a new set of cymbals after about a month... the stock standard ones are pretty low quality and dent and bend easily.

I'm not a drummer (yet), but I can play them decently (meaning I can play along but not know much about what I'm doing besides sound) I can probably help you, especially if I get in touch with a buddy of mine who I play with and has been drumming for going on ten years (over 2/3 of his life so far lol). The cheapest one I found that isn't complete crap is a $300 5 piece set with cymbals, which are $100 (for hi-hats) to like $300 (for like a 24" ride). It's from Sound Percussion, and I found it in a Musician's Friend catalog. That would be my first choice, but, like guitars, you can't go wrong with a Gretsch set, although they aren't starter sets. If you don't go for the one I mentioned above, then try getting some used jazz kits. Jazz kits are basically the 4- or 5-piece sets with hi-hats and one or two cymbals. Try craigslist, ebay, or local music shops. Good luck with your search, if you have any question or anything, leave a comment with me or I;m sure a7x guy could help, too!

I wouldn't advise getting a cheap kit cause they usually suck a mid range kit would be advisable so it doesn't fall apart. I don't know American pricings so i can't really help you. If your really stuck go to a shop and tell them your starting to play my first kit was a Yamaha Rydeen.

i got a Pear Aquarian set and it was used
it's pretty much one of the best sets ive heard
my dad also reconstructed our old set recently and got a new snare for it
it sounds awesome but idk what kind it is cuz the comp. names are worn off
but yes i would suggest Pearl or Tama cuz those the only 2 i can think of
but of course since this is ur 1st set u should prolly get a used one
