Hey man what song is this?:

http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/gregs1020/music /play836458

At 0:55?
it's a Ratt song from the 80s. I think it's on the round and round album or lay it down. i forget. my buddy jorge did that clip and taught me the riff. it's pretty cool. it's in drop d tuning. it's real easy.

Sup man, actually everything was pretty much at noon including the EQ. I rolled back the volume a tad so the mic wouldn't get very staticy since it's not designed for amp recording. Oh, and it was the bridge/middle position as far as pickups.
oh okay. Just wondering how well it cleans up if you're using say, Guns N Roses level of gain.

What kind of pickups, BTW? Bridge/middle didn't sound thin at all.

So I ended up buying the Tweaker. First thing I want to do is replace the tubes with 6V6 JJs, just because of quality/preference reasons. If I change the tubes out for the same type, will it need to be rebiased?
the amp never needs to be biased according to customer service at egnater. i used jj 6L6s and i think they sound better than a set of old RCA 6L6s i have. i'm glad i didn't pay a bunch for those, old tubes aren't always worth big bucks i found out. i thought the stock tubes were decent but i haven't tried another set of 6v6s. i did get some RCA 6v6s from acousticmirror. i need to try those. congrats man, great amp.

According to Egnater customer service. tubes do not need to be matched, and the amp will never need a bias. simply unplug the amp from the wall power and swap out the tubes. so far the best overall tone i am getting is from an old set of EL34s made in UK. but i really just use it for gainy hard rock or metal type tones. also, i use an EH in V1 and a JJ in the PI (V3). that helped clear up the amp a bit. having tried a few configs in the preamp, that's what i've settled on. i do like the amp with 6v6s as well. i thought the stock ones were pretty good but now i just got a set of USA RCA 6v6s, so i have to try those in there. i got them for my 5e3 clone actually. Congrats!

I actually just bought the Tweaker off MF today. Got a nice deal on a used one in like new condition and a 20% off coupon. Should be here by Thursday. I tried out the JCA20H at GC a couple days ago and just couldn't fall in love with it. Terrific amp nonetheless.

ya that's what i was gonna suggest for cleans. The tweaker is a much better clean to crunch amp then the jca.

Sup man. Seen that you were a Soldano fan and have tinkered around with the Jet City 20W. I tried to test one out at GC today but they didn't have any and I plan on buying one tomorrow. Was just curious if you messed around with the cleans on it and if you think it's a solid investment if cleans is mostly what I play. Thanks.

Probably not the best bet for cleans man. I mean it will do them but not nearly as well as some other amps. The JCA will do high gain better then a lot of amps in that price range. What's your budget? you getting a head and a cab?

I actually meant the AC15, never caught that. Mostly blues and some classic rock (SRV, Page). No hard rock or metal or anything like that.
Oh, well that's still a good deal either way. The AC15 is a great amp. I never tried to get SRV out of one but i bet it could be coaxed. The tweaker would be more versatile, but both should do what you want pretty well. That's a tough decision, you need to try them both for an extended period if possible. let me know what you decide, i don't think you would go wrong either way really.

Thanks for the tips man. Everybody always tells me to "go for the egnater" and there is always only one or two that justify their answer. I am still stuck between the AC30 and the Tweaker. They are both in the same price range and I got a 20% off coupon from MusiciansFriend that I know works on the Tweaker but I haven't tested it with the Vox yet. As far as the EL84s go though, they can't be swapped with 34s/6V6/6L6 can they?

no they can't swap with el84s. the tweaker can also take KT77s, i just haven't tried them yet. how is a vox ac30 in the same price range as a tweaker? my head version was about $350 and i've never seen an ac30 that low. what tones are you going after?

gregs1020 wrote on Jul 6th, 2010 11:45pm

i've had 3 different sets of 6L6s, and 3 different sets of EL34s in the tweaker as well as the stock 6v6s. i have another set of nos 6v6s coming for it. the 6L6s have more headroom, the el34s more mid range "growl". the amp sounds good no matter what, it's just "what are you going after" really. right now i have some really good el34s in there and use another amp for fender cleans. but with the 6v6 or 6L6 tubes the amps does a nice fender impression. i bet i could do a guess the amp thread and half would be wrong. seriously.

Hi gregs,

Somebody mentioned in my post about buying a Tweaker and said you did some tube swappage on it. Just curious what tubes you swapped and what changed with the tone coming from the amp. If you think your approach would be better for me, please let me know!

I bet! I would be so stoked! Just standing there playing guitar and watching the audience groove with it would be such a high! You seem like you have everything pulled together for the master plan though! If you guys ever make it enough to go on a tour, promise me you will stop by either St. Louis or Dallas.

Yeah I like to think I have everything together but who knows. Yeah of course I'll let you know if we do...and if you ever make it to the RI area, let me know.

Good deal! All I can do is offer the best of luck lol. I am thinking about moving back to Missouri and being a rhythm guitarist for my buddy's band. It is nowhere close to my own style but it is gigging experience, which I will need.

You guys done any gigs yet?

Hey thanks. I know its tough in the rock music world, but really I just enjoy creating, playing with the best people and fulfilling my passion. Good luck with you too- I know moving out of state is a big decision and can be scary. The experience will be a good learning one I'm sure.

We have not gig'd yet. We actually only found our bass player a few months ago, so we're finally making much needed progress with song writing and such. We plan to start playing out mid-late summer :)

I'm stoked!

Good! I was playing my acoustic for the longest. Decided recently to venture over into the electric world. So much more to take into account! Other than that, just being me I suppose! What about you? I heard your songs on MySpace, completely awesome!

Yeah I started on electric, then got really comfortable with acoustic, and now I prefer electric. I guess I go through my phases but I love both. Electric just gives you so many options, and acoustic is unique in its own.

Hey thanks for checking them out! Even though they are crappy live/practice recordings. We couldn't wait to get some music up but we're going to re-do them and record more songs.
