Thanks for your response to my question. In regards to bending sides:

To bend the sides (I used walnut), I soaked the wood in water for about 24 hours, then ran a blowtorch through a steel pipe (though I can't tell you much about what kind of steel it was). When the pipe was hot enough to boil water quickly, I GENTLY pressed the wood down on the pipe. I cannot emphasize GENTLY enough. If you press to strongly, you'll split the wood or maybe just put an ugly crease in it. If the wood dries out, stop and re-soak it. You might have to put some kind of bracing next to the wood while it's underwater so the soaking doesn't un-bend it. I just placed bricks next to the wood so it couldn't straighten out.
