Ruso:

Noob is inspired by metal and hard rock guitarists, loves their crushing tones and heavy overdrive. He immediately runs to a guitar shop, sometimes via a Total Guitar magazine, and asks the salesperson what setup would be good for metal.
The salesperson looks our noob up and down, sees that they're obviously a beginner, probably doesn't have much cash, so directs our friend to the beginners' section of the shop. This all too often actually takes up most of the shop, as the Internet takes over the higher end of the market.
First up, obviously, we have the guitar to choose. Noobie's pulse is already climbing just looking at the long racks of shiny guitars, those gleaming weapons of rock.
At the far end of the store, furthest away from the door, in a little shrine of their own, are the Gibson Les Pauls. The salesperson whips out a box of tissues to stem the flow of drool that has begun to cascade from our noob's mouth as he stares at these divine angels of music.
However, inevitably, the price tag on the Les Pauls are almost heavier than the guitars themselves, and even as our noob's neck cracks as his head whiplashes around to address the salesperson, he is already being reminded that, "I'm afraid we can't let you touch them, but you can try out these Epiphones instead".
Crestfallen, our noob's eyes alight on the Epiphone rack. His inexperienced gaze fails to recognise the difference between the brands, and the blood starts pumping again. Figuring that anything remotely resembling a Les Paul must be worthy of Jimmy Page's own patronage, he considers it a bargain that he can walk away with the spectacular Les Paul Special II, or if he's especially minted, the LP100.
Next, our noob has a few amps in front of him, but his eyes immediately fix on the iconic Marshall logo. He stands stock still, gazing at that beautiful gold finish, clean white logo on the black speaker cloth. He's seen that look so many times, behind so many great acts! Glancing at the price tag, he's astounded that such a legendary amp can be available for less than £100!
Grinning manically, our noob buys the Marshall MG.
The moral of the story?
Ask the wise people here on UG before buying your first guitar and amp.
Sure, some users may be a bit irritated to have to answer the question yet again, but remember that primary school teachers basically teach the same crap every year, but it happens to constitute a huge part of our education.
Okay, the objective of this blog is to provide a series of lessons that aren't really long enough to go into the Lessons section of the site, and aren't so short that you have no idea what to do with them. Hopefully, you'll be able to take something from these shorts and incorporate it into your own playing.
1. Pentatonic Modes
So let's say that you're improvising in B minor, and you're using the B minor pentatonic scale, in the Em shape: |--7-----10--| |--7-----10--| |--7---9-----| |--7---9-----| |--7---9-----| |--7-----10--|
Now, what would happen if you took that exact same shape and moved it down so that what is placed as the minor third of the shape (10th fret on the E strings) is placed as the root on B.
Well, you get the B major pentatonic scale:
|--4-----7--| |--4-----7--| |--4---6----| |--4---6----| |--4---6----| |--4-----7--| Fair enough, but what happens if you put a different part of the shape on the root at B?
Moving what originally covered the 5th to the root at B produces this: |--0-----3--| |--0-----3--| |--0---2----| |--0---2----| |--0---2----| |--0-----3--|
With the B as the root, we have (1 b3 4 b6 b7). The fifth has gone, to be replaced by the darker b6. Experiment with this scale over a B minor progression - don't use the fifth at all, unless it's to bend or slide up to the b6, or down to the 4.
Putting limitations on yourself like this, as opposed to just running up and down the full natural minor scale, can be useful in coming up with new ideas.
Try out the other 2 modes of the minor pentatonic, and see what you can come up with.
The problem most people seem to have with Windows Vista is how slow it is. I've got Vista, and I've managed to get it to a good speed now, having followed advice from places like lifehacker.com. The main problem is the RAM-eating parts of the OS. Some of what you can do to cut down on this is:
On the desktop, right-click > Personalize > Theme; and choose one that isn't Aero
Start > Games > Tools > Performance Information and Tools > Adjust Visual Effects > Adjust for best performance
Go back, and click Manage startup programs > Show for all users and remove the ones you don't need, eg iTunes and Quicktime
Go back, and click Open Disk Cleanup. Go through that, specifying what you want to remove. Everything but Hibernation Files if you hibernate, are fine to go
Start > Computer; right-click on (C: ) > Properties; uncheck the box for indexing. Do the same for (D: ) if you have one
Go to Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift + Esc) > Services > Services [in the bottom-right]. Go through each of them and right-click > Properties on each one to do with software (eg iTunes, Media Center). You can set these to Manual if they are on Automatic. This means they will only run when called to, instead of running all the time
More general things you can do are: delete any desktop shortcuts and icons that you don't need a lot; and remove any programs you don't use. If you want a fast internet browser, I'd recommend Avant or Opera, though Firefox is getting quicker.
