This is a somewhat hard stage for new guitar players. Picking your first guitar. Now if you don't know if you are going to be staying with guitar, rent one. But if you know that guitar is what you like and what you are going to play buy one. Either way, you still have to pick a guitar. I suggest staying away from acoustic guitars. Unless you are going to be playing cords (not powercords) and country-like songs. If that's the case, get an acoustic. But I would suggest an electric acoustic. They give the same sound and you can plug it in to an amp, and they usually come with a built in EQ and tuner.
Now if you are not going to be playing country-like tunes, I would suggest an electric. Now they come in lots of styles and colors. You can get a good beginner guitar for around $200. Barracuda is a good electric (and acoustic) brand for beginners. They come in alot of different styles and colors. You can talk to an employee at a guitar shop about wich one is good for you. But whatever guitar you pick, make sure like everything about it. One more thing: STAY AWAY FROM USED GUITARS
