It may just be me but why, in fairly recent years, have all the good people been disappearing? I know I've been born into an era that wasn't blessed with Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Buddy Holly, Keith Moon etc.. But we still had a fair few who stuck it out and are/were still around..
I've just heard of the death of Les Paul and it's really brought home the fact that we're losing whatever living idols and legends we actually had the fortune to live in the same time-space as. I mean, Les is gone. Michael Jackson, Mitch Mitchel, James Brown, all the great players and performers of our time seem to be dropping within the last few years.
It's quite scary.
Soon, we're only going to be left with a handful of people who we can actually aspire to. We still got David Bowie, Sting, Pete Townshend, Paul McCartney etc.. But they're not gonna be around forever. Who will our kids aspire to be like then? I honestly can't think of anybody quite worthy enough.
Soon music will be dead. Brace yourself for a boring musical press and charts thereafter people.
"We still got David Bowie, Sting, Pete Townshend, Paul McCartney..." and only two of those are really who we class as 'greats'. Only two pioneers. Remember, there's only so much you can cram into a century! I believe that all the obvious stuff has been done. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for the next big breakthrough and that could be in in 2 weeks or twenty years! Even then, how much of a breakthrough will it be? I'm not convinced that there's any more that needs to be done in the way of technological development for music unless we want computers doing all the work (nearly there!). We just gotta wait until something truly remarkable comes along like LP. We may not like it at first but it may become a very important part of musical history. Hey who knows... Franz Ferdinand may inspire the next Hendrix!
It certainly is a sad thought but all things must pass. We still got some though like you said...
