I first really started to listen to music when I was 12, which really consisted of mainstream bands such as Nickelback, Queen, Destiny's Child, The Rasmus and Avril Lavigne. It was later on when I was about 14 that I started coming across bands such as Metallica, Genesis and Megadeth. And even later at about 15/16 when I came across the likes of Nevermore, Dream Theater and Symphony X.
After attempting to write my first song, which was a complete disaster. I turned to the Internet. I progressed reasonably well, however my in-depth knowledge of Music Theory was less than satisfactory. This wasn't helped by the fact that I had picked up the Bass after choosing which subjects to do for my GCSEs.
That all changed when I met my current bass teacher Chris Betts, who is currently in the Christian Rock band "The Connection". I probably wouldn't be where I am at the moment without his tuition and guidance. He taught me to have understanding and awareness of music as a single unit and how everything works and functions together in that unit. There is always something I can get better at practically or musically when I am with Chris. Its also because of him that I now have a greater appreciation of more mainstream styles of music, and general open mindedness to other genres of music outside of my musical comfort zone.
