My Views On Things

Current mood: thoughtful

I just felt like writing down a list of my opinions on certain topics. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. These are mine;

Abortion: Easily justifiable, unborn babies don't feel pain. In the case of disablement it really doesn't seem like there is an issue in my mind. A feotus (sp?) that is destined to be severely disabled will experience a life time of pain, if the pregnancy is terminated it will feel none. If a woman wants an abortion I believe she has the choice to do what she wishes with her body and her genetics. I don't feel that anyone has the right to interfere, only advise.

Religion: Please just make it stop. It discriminates, it divides society, it starts wars, it traumatizes children and it justifies this by telling us that we need it for moral guidance. Like Christopher Hitchens says; People weren't wandering around murdering and stealing from eachother before they found out about the ten commandments and without their existance, no would start to. Society would progress much faster without it and would be much happier. Plus I would take great pleasure in punching the Pope in the face. Not just because he's the Pope either. He's a real class A douchebag.

Michael Jackson: I feel there is sufficent evidence to clear his name (with regards to the claims of peadophilia) and he was a great artist. He had a very tough life and thankfully he's beyond the critics abuse now. RIP.

Racism/homophobia/xenophobia: Skin colour is depicted by pigments in the skin, homosexuality is not a choice and neither is birthplace. How anyone could make the claim that these things in anyway change how a person should be treated is beyond me. Fear of people who are different to us is an innate thing within all humans, a natural instinct, which we should use our reason and intellect to ignore completely.

Atheism/theism: I'm an atheist, there is no getting passed it, I don't believe in the Judeo/Christian God, I don't believe in Allah, the Demiurge, or flying teapots. I do not think that Jesus was the son of God, I do not think that Muhammed was his prophet. To me these are all assumptions, I cannot disprove a single one of them, just like I can't disprove the existance of the invisable dancing monkey on your head, but I still choose to not believe in them because I prefer concrete facts to ideas. Though i'm no nihilist either, because to me that is more or less the same, i'd prefer nihilism to be true but I can't be a hypocrite and believe in it. So i'm an agnostic atheist; an atheist simply because i'm not a theist, but ultimately; agnostic because I don't know, so refuse to speculate. That is all.

Drugs: I don't take drugs, never have, probably never will. Unless you count sugar ... but don't count sugar. I just don't feel the urge and don't feel they are for me. But I will say this: I make a personal choice to not do drugs, another person might make a personal choice to do drugs within the privacy of his own home, why am I not prosecuted but he is? Surely neither of us are harming anyone? Our descisions are only affecting ourselves, so I wont tell others to not do drugs, and he wont tell others to do drugs. Sounds peachy to me. Of course you need to be aware of the facts, but if you are doing it in a safe environment and know what you are taking, then it's not my place to judge you. Drug dealers of course are another matter and one I can't be bothered to get into.

Music: Needless to say I like music. But I dislike musical elitists. I also dislike people who consider a genre more important than an artist. I don't care if an artist plays pop music, if it's good music i'll listen to it. I don't care what genre they play and neither should you. A musicain is a musicain as far as i'm concerned, everyone is just trying to sell their art and live their life's, so why don't you let them do it in peace?

Profanity: Fuck, shit, cunt. That is all.

Pronography: Why is this even an issue for some people? Some people like to have sex on camera, some people like to watch. Deal with it, go find better things to do with your time.

The Death Penalty: Only justifiable in the most extreme of cases, and if it is to be used at all serious work needs to be done into finding a more humane method. Though maybe if governments stopped arresting drug users they'd have more space to keep their peadophiles and murderers ... just a thought.

Grammar/spelling: As you may have seen in this blog, i'm not amazing with spelling, I mess up like no one's business. Is it readable? I'd imagine so. Do you still have an issue? Then promptly fuck off. I'm sure you can use your amazing intelligence to work out how to leave the page.

Ghosts and the supernatural: If I have a yoyo in my pocket, and I tell someone about this, and they ask for proof, then I show them the yoyo. If I tell them there is a ghost next to me, and they ask for proof, then why is it suddenly their responsibility to disprove my claim? In my opinion the only reason the supernatural is given exemption from ordinary logic is because there is no way for 'believers' to sustain their belief, unless they do not allow it to be properly questioned. Science is a vast and wonderful thing, it can probably explain why things go bump in the night, it's just unfortunate that a lot of people would probably just ignore it if it did, even if the truth is painfully obvious.

Potential future topics: Politics, recycling.

If I think of new things to write about i'll put them up here. Until then, goodbye and thanks for reading.

About Me

Current mood: calm

I've decided to expand on the section on the front page of my profile and divulge a little bit about myself so that anyone who is bored enough to read this can learn.

Well i'm very nearly 17 and i've recently dropped out of college after completing my AS levels, i'm currently looking for a job and some musical outlets to get involved in.

I'm a guitarist and bassist of around 3 years and i'm learning keyboards aswell. Guitar is my preferred instrument though. On bass I really only play funk-rock and a little bit of blues aswell. On guitar I have a wider range of genres but I focus on blues, rock, hard-rock, acoustic rock and funk and do my best to fuse these interests.

My musical tastes are fairly varied, I listen to; hard-rock, classic-rock, hair-metal, country, funk, acoustic-rock, rap, instrumental, classical, progressive, swing, alternative and other obscure peices that I find. I also like comedy music such as; Tim Minchin, Bill Bailey and Weird Al Yankovic.

People often call me "quiet" but I think i'm going someway to losing this personna as I get older. I'm generally very relaxed and don't get worked up or angry very easily although I do get the typical angst and depression that goes along with being young. I'm generally seen as a 'funny guy' and I really do try my best to entertain the people around me at any time. I don't drink or do drugs and 9 times out of 10 will choose to stay in and relax than go out somewhere.

I'm a songwriter but not much of a singer and I hope that can go someway to helping me get somewhere in the world. I find songwriting to be a great release and nothing beats the feeling of getting a repressed feeling out into a song that you are incredibly proud of.

There are a few things I want to achieve in life:
1) Become successful for bass or guitar playing.
2) Punch a xenophobe in the face.
3) Learn to play Piano.
4) Learn to work the saxophone and play just what I feel.
5) Another point for this list.

To expand on point 2; I really cannot stand racism or any form of discrimination. I've come to learn over the years that there is no reason to judge anyone on any aspect of their person other than their choices and their personality.

I was raised a Catholic but have come to despise all forms of religion. I'm now an atheist although I don't like to flaunt my beliefs in other people's faces and have a lot of respect for the idea that everyone has a valid opinion and would not judge someone on the basis that they have a different outlook on the origins of the universe than I do or have different information, there's always a chance i'm wrong afterall.

That's pretty much all I can think of at the moment. If you read all that then you are quite amazing and I applaud and thank you. Dave.

An idea ...

Current mood: contemplative

So today I visited the dentist and as I was waiting outside I noticed a small church accross the road. I then noticed that this church was quite a terrifying and awe inspiring sight when viewed from this point.

The main thing I noticed though, was the roof. It was pointing upwards and I immediately asked myself the question "Where is it pointing too?" (not out loud, that would have been weird). I found the question very easy to answer "It's pointing to God, it's pointing to heaven". This answer (which I pressume to be correct) inspired me somewhat; people (like me) spend years and even decades trying to find God, so how can this secular group of Christians be so positive in their beliefs that they feel they are able to 'point' to a God a lot of people cannot find.

It just got me thinking again about how little people like to be challenged, on anything. If I told a teacher they were bad at golf they would most likely shake this off and not be offended, if I told them they were bad at teaching they would immediately do everything possible to counter this accusation, same with an IT expert, or a doctor, or even a priest. Why are we so insecure that we must defend ourselves on our strongest areas? I find this quite odd.

I also thought about ignorance. Why must a secular group (a minority at that) try and direct our attention to something a growing number of people do not believe in? I was brought up a Christian and recently went through the process of opening myself to atheist beliefs (although i'm more agnostic than anything) and I can see that when you are in a religion there seems to be no other option for truth and A LOT of information is not given to you. Proof of this lies in the fact that when Richard Dawkins and his fellow scientists started openly preaching atheism, they delivered information that people had not previously had access to and as a result numbers of atheists started to grow (of course this was not the only reason but it was an undeniable factor).

That was all I have to say really, thank you for reading this and if you have a response I would be very grateful if you could leave a comment.

Haven't Blogged in a while

Current mood: calm

So What's new then. Well I stated 6th form this year and to tell you the truth it's kind of hard. There's alot of work involved but i'm generally much happier in school then I have been for about 3 years.
Guitar wise things are going ok, I generally worry whether or not i'll ever be good but there are those few moments that really make me thing that i've got something good ... just wish I could record that. I really need to practise bass more but I might aswell just wait until I get my new one (http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/search.asp?oid=2513).
So it's all looking good really, thanks for checking in.

The Future

Current mood: contemplative

Terrifying isn't it? I've started looking at University recently but have no idea what to do with myself. I've decided that my future lies in Psychology (after realising that my Rockstar dream will probably never happen, a massive blow if i'm honest) so I want to carry that on but I really don't know where, i'd like to stay in Birmingham but it would be interesting to make a new start elsewhere if not a little daunting.
The Universities that seem worth studying at I worry about getting into and the ones I could get into easily don't seem worth studying at, catch 22 I guess.
so if you're reading what do you worry about in your futue? Or if you are a little older how did your dreams plan out?

Thanks For The Time, Dave.

Feeling Great

Current mood: accomplished

Just wanted to chart the great feeling i'm having at the moment so that when things go badly (and they always do) I can look back on this.
I was playing guitar at a friend (and fellow Uger's) house and was very much on form, I played the best rendition of "Voodoo Child" I have ever played and just felt really good about my playing, I also have enough money for a new amp and am getting more soon for effects, my band is on the brink of beginning to write/record so things could not be going better right now.
 - As always thanks for tuning in, sincerely your friend
