BobMarleysGhost wrote on Oct 21st, 2008 10:55pmWell, "Blackwater Park" is very much considered Opeth's Magnum Opus, and rightly so, as it's an amazing album, arguably best illustrating the fusion of Death metal with progressive rock, and the excellent clean vocals of Mike. "Still Life" is considered their breakthrough album, and is also a great place to start.
Start with them, and you can't go far wrong. After that, I'd say get "Ghost Reveries", then "Deliverance". The older stuff by them ("Orchid", "Mornigrise", "My Arms, Your Hearse" are more death metal orientated, with far more pronounced twin guitar harmonies, which were dropped (to an extent) later on. The newest album, "Watershed", features a lot more prog elements, and a bit less Death Metal (it's still there, though).
If you are after the pure prog side of Opeth, they released "Damnation" (a 2 cd release with "Deliverance - much like Metallica's "Load" and "Reload", only awesome) which has no heavy guitars or Death vocals.
