The Ultimate Guide to Guitar: Interest check

Hey all!

After a few months of absence (sorting out personal problems) I am back on UG, and contemplating finishing what I started almost 1 year ago: the Ultimate Guide to Guitar. Before I do this, however, I'd like to know from you guys what you'd like me to do, what you're interested in most...

So basically, like I said, there's only a few articles I had left planned out, all belonging to "Part IV: Advanced players":
  • Diatonic modes (2 theory articles)
  • Modal chord progressions (theory article, although I'm not too sure if I'm still doing this one)
  • Sweep picking (technique article)
I'd like to finish the UGG once and for all by completing these articles, but first I need to know if there's going to be an audience for them. That's why I'm asking you, the readers: which of the above articles would you like me to write most? Are you interested in an article on sweep picking more than you're interested in modal chord progressions? Or would you like to understand the diatonic modes above all else?

If as many people as possible could just comment on this blog and tell me which articles they'd like to see done the most, I'd be one step closer to completing my UGG. It's a guide for the public, after all, so the public should be able to decide what in there!

After I complete the remaining articles, I'm considering a total rewrite from Part I, Chapter 1 onwards... More information on this rewrite will follow once I've succesfully finished off the remaining articles. Check out this blog regularly if you want to stay informed!

Good to be back!
Cheers!

Sweep Picking! The other guides were rubbish.

^ Right, that's not exactly the kind of helpful, constructive criticism I was looking for...

Welcome back! :)

All of them :D I'd be interested in the sweep picking one cos I haven't tried it yet, and there are always threads on modes - there are lots of articles/lessons, but a lot of them are confusing, so a good new modes lesson would be useful. Darren's lesson on modal chord progressions is pretty good, but I think its the only one, so as long as you've got something more to say that would be cool - I'd read it!

Modal chord progressions! I loved the rest. I think guitar guy means all the other writers' articles ZeGuitarist.

sporkman7 wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 9:25am

id say something on modes in general. maybe showing the 7 modes and explaining their usage, so probably the modal chord progression one

Oh, right, my bad then... cheers

I'm going to go with the modal progressions one. There's too much inaccurate modal information going around.

sammo_boi wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 9:36am

diatonic modes? is that like harmonic minor? If it is i would really like an article on it because there is nothing anywhere on the harmonic modes.

quote

ZeGuitarista wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 9:37am

^ Diatonic modes, as in the modes of the diatonic scale: Ionian - Dorian - Phrygian - etc.

I might throw in something on the harmonic and melodic minor scales as well, I don't know. Any interest in that?

quote

sammo_boi wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 9:41am

ok, i thought it might just be the regular modes of the major scale. but yeah an article on the harmonic minor scale would be cool if you know anything about them.

Can you do a harmonic/melodic minor modal chord progs lesson?!

I would be interested in some more information on modal progressions. I find sweep picking lessons are a let down on paper, I think you need to be able to see the sweep picking technique to truely 'get it'. A modal progression article would benefit from some information on the diatonic modes, so I say those two topics.

quote

mentalrazorback wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 11:53am

I would be much more interested in a really good article on modal progressions as there is a surplus of information on sweep picking already in my opinion and not enough information on modes, etc. Cheers.

Loldemonwar wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 3:24pm

a sweeping lesson by you would be sick

p.s-welcome back, ive been following your lessons since i found them and they've help me a lot, thanks man.

quote

MushroomBomb wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 5:29pm

Well, I'm nowhere near advanced enough to really comment on the theory parts, but it seems to me that there are ridiculously large amounts of guides for sweep-picking, including video guides.

So I'd have to vote either diatonic modes or modal chord progressions, even though I know next to nothing about either.

Cheers, and welcome back! :)

I believe sweeing and diatonic modes would be sweet, I loved loved loved your previous lessons and was sad to see them not continue, welcome back!

The.new.guy wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 8:58pm

I would like to see the two theory articles the most, although all of them would be great. Personally, I know you would have a decent audience. You're famous on this website, after all! Even if you wrote a bunch of beginner stuff, I think you would have an audience.

Welcome back! :)

My vote is for modal progressions.

quote

njm0830 wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 11:07pm

I vote write all three BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

but on a serious note I'd vote for modal chord progressions, where you go through analyze modes explain how they work with the chords and such, there are always a ton of guides on sweep picking

quote

WishfulShredder wrote on Aug 20th, 2009 3:44am

I'd say something completely different.
you can find all about these things by hanging around in MT and Guitar Techniques forums.
Maybe something on how to arrange peices for guitar?
that be cool.
Or some classical/Modern Acoustic Technique stuff.

KoenDercksen wrote on Aug 20th, 2009 10:02am

welcome back dude,

my vote is for modal progressions. :D

Modal chord progressions.
Glad to see you and UGG are back.
Just like ol' times. :D

quote

The4thHorsemen wrote on Aug 20th, 2009 6:55pm

Hell yea dude, I've followed these lessons from the beginning, I only wish I had these lessons when I was first learning all of this. I'd like to see a article on modes or modal chord progressions because there is so much misinformation about those topics, and it would be great to have something to link the noobs to

quote

Callo wrote on Aug 21st, 2009 9:07am

Hey ZeG
It does not worry me at all which one you do, as long as there is something. Since you have not been posting lessons, i have not been on UG at all basically. My guitaring has not improved, i remember i used to sit up all night waiting for your next article to be viewed. So my guitaring could improve after the knowledge.

I learned so much from you before, i have all guitar lessons i have found in a folder and 90% of it is your stuff.

Cheers ZeG, hope to see you soon.
If i had to pick, Modal Chord Prgressions

quote

RetroCaesar wrote on Aug 22nd, 2009 7:16am

Dude, It's great to see you back...I haven't been really been doing any guitar related stuff since you left. Your articles were great and its great to see you may be doing a rewrite for some. If I had a choice Modal Chord Prgressions.

P.S You dont know how much trouble I got into for printing all the lessons you had available in my school computer lab. :)

quote

salmon philippe wrote on Aug 23rd, 2009 8:27am

welcome , glad to see you back too !
the diatonic modes would be great , specialy explain How to use them (on which chords)

quote

KiaranSeanJay wrote on Aug 24th, 2009 5:58pm

i think a guide explaing the 7 modes would be good, all your guides are easy to understand compared to lots of the other writers :)

quote

webbtje wrote on Aug 25th, 2009 12:46pm

I personally would find the one on modes and how to use them the most helpful of the lot, I don't really care for sweep picking unless there's a hefty section on economy picking.

quote

OverUnderOnward wrote on Aug 27th, 2009 3:32am

Hey ZeG, glad to see you're back and considering picking things up. Not gonna lie, I'd love if you wrote all of them: your guides are really easy to understand and really effective. So on the one hand, I'm sure if you wrote a sweeping guide it would be excellent and very helpful in learning to sweep, which I'd love, but on the other hand, you make theory very easy to understand, so...

Sorry for the gushing praise. I've used your articles for a while to great effect.

quote

Snowy Dark wrote on Aug 27th, 2009 4:43am

i would prefer the sweep picking and diatonic modes more than the modal chord progressions, for i would use sweep picking more, and i prefer technique over chord theory

damnphrophet wrote on Aug 30th, 2009 7:17pm

quote

Machado wrote on Aug 30th, 2009 8:13pm

If you could do all of them that be awesome lol but diatonic and sweep are the ones that need to be done the most, since most of the other articles on them are quite inacurrate

quote

Rain Lancer wrote on Sep 5th, 2009 8:53am

I'd like to see all of those articles you mentioned above. I have trouble applying modes, so I feel like those articles would probably clear some things up. And sweep picking is always good thing. Good to see you're back man!
