SG Diablo

Current mood: ecstatic

Well, my Diablo arrived a few days ago and it's absolutely immense! I'm so glad I took the opportunity to get one.

It was the first in Gibson's "Guitar of the Month" series this year (basically, this year Gibson have been releasing a new limited edition guitar every month that's either a fresh look at an old design, or a completely new design, with production limited to 1000 guitars) and basically what makes it different from a regular SG is it's red metallic finish, 24-frets, repositioned volume/tone pots, carved top and a pair of the oh so sweet Gibson Burstbucker  Pro pickups.

The finish is stunning. Paired with the gold hardware it makes the guitar beautiful to look at. The carved top makes this SG one of the sexiest ever and it looks even better in real life, photos can't do it justice. It's my first 24-fret guitar and I like having those extra frets. They really make the guitar more versatile, especially for a player like me. The volume pot has been repositioned closer to the pickups to make volume swells easier; I don't know about that, but I was more worried about it getting in the way during picking. Of course, due to the way in which the pot sits on the carved top, it doesn't affect picking at all. All-in-all, this is just one incredibly comfortable guitar.

The pickups are the icing on the cake. They're just brilliant, absolutely brilliant - they can take anything you throw at them and more. The neck pickup is great and it even sounds good with distortion on, not getting muddy at all, allowing you to get some real dirty tones. The bridge is just fantastic. Enough said.

Full review coming after I've had the guitar a little while longer. If you want to see pics of my Diablo, go to my Bebo pics: http://www.bebo.com/PhotoAlbum.jsp?MemberId=137464 1496&PhotoNbr=1&PhotoAlbumId=9470334587 . Otherwise, there's plenty of stock pics floating about on the internet.
