I may not be ripping awesome solos, but without a rhythm a song almost has nothing to fall back on. What would a song sound like without some rhythm going during a solo? I believe rhythm is needed to keep timing right and to give the song a fuller sound. If you think a rhythm guitarist is useless, well don't have one and let me know how that works out for you.
