Basically, check out Will Oldham, aka Bonnie Prince Billy, Palace Brothers, etc etc. Recommended starting points are checking out his wikipedia page, and the albums: 'I See a Darkness', 'Joya', 'Lie Down in the Light'. First is very dark, slow and quaint. Second is rocky folk, but distinctively folk. Third is wonderful contemporary country with witty lyrics and great female vocals.
