The score may be huge but always, there is really only a few essential things going to imply harmony, melody, bassline, and counterpoint. That is how these composers managed to create monuments out of tiny bricks, so why not see it as they saw it. And always keep your eye on the big picture and ask "why this, now?"

Technically, I guess you can fight Lavos whenever you want, but this is when it becomes a main priority.

Ah yes, I know what part you're talking about. That "Magic Land," (The Dark Ages, as I know them) is my favorite area of the game.
