Yo, I was checking out Texas State via the internet and looking at some of the syllabuses and the classes seem a easier than the college in Oklahoma i'm considering transferring to.

I just felt like I would let you know that Texas is probably full of retards because of that.

Aw dawg, I didn't mean to make you delete your thread or anything. Looking back it was a bit silly of me to post that OP. But thanks anyway, though. *nod of appreciation*

The point was made; there was no need for my thread to continue. To do so would cross the line between making a point and making fun.

The first looks like a normal major pentatonic, but can you link me an example of the latter? Is it a gamelan scale? Kind sounds like a Pelog scale.

And nig, that was gorgeous.

I'm having trouble finding examples on youtube, but it's used a lot in Cantonese folk music. There's a famous gaohu player named Yu Qiwei (余其偉;) that plays a lot of Cantonese music, so I'd start there.

If you really want that 'asian' sound, there are 2 good ways to get it. Omit the 4th and the 7th degrees of the major scale, or if you're feeling really brave, omit the 6th and sharpen the 4th and 7th degrees by a quarter tone.

I see the resemblance. I think I'll still keep it though...Good ear, by the way.

Also, I was thinking about it some more, and I think the seed for the idea for this melody comes from this track. Maybe it will show you what I mean by the asian sound.

I know you don't like DBZ, but this the the first episode of the original series, and tell me the song in the very first 20-30 seconds of that video isn't gorgeous.

It isn't gorgeous.

Hey, I'm writing a Prelude and Toccata thing for my junior recital, and I want the Prelude to be sort of slow and Asian sounding. I have a primary theme that I really like, but I'm afraid it sounds kind of familiar. Since you're the traditional asian music guru, does it sound like anything you've heard?

To be honest, I don't think that sounds very Chinese in rhythm or melody. But perhaps it sounds familiar because: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detail page&v=TkV-of_eN2w#t=27s

I don't know! I'd agree w/ Stewie I guess. I mean when I was younger obviously 18 seemed old, but now I'm a month away from being 18 and I ask myself "Am I ready for porn?" (The answer is no.) But yeah, I guess it's too young but shouldn't be illegal. If you can be sent to pack sand on the frontlines in Afghanistan you can act in porn I guess. \_(ツ;)_/

But yeah, where are you going now?

Sweet, I love annoying hipsters. Sounds like a nice place that i'll remember to consider.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_Panhandle_St ate_University

That is where I go, right in the middle of nowhere. I reckon the people are moderately different than those in your area. I'm pretty much surrounded by either cowboys/cowgirls or people who are too afraid/got pregnant/suck at life/etc. to go to a different school. I would like to leave before I fall into one of the second categories. The school that's #1 on my list is in Edmond OK which is like an hour away from Norman. I would probably choose there over your place because of in state tuition.

I'm on a payment plan (I lost my scholarship because some paperwork I forgot to turn in), and I do three payments of about $1,100 a semester. How does that sound to you? I don't really know how good or bad that is. I didn't have a whole lot of options for school because it had to have a classical guitar program.

That's about how much mine is, 3k a semester. But my school is super shitty and the prices keep rising for unknown reasons. I'll totally consider your school when making my decision. If where I currently am leaning towards transferring to works out i'll be a few hours closer to San Marcos than I am now at least. Still like 7 hours though. But the price probably wouldn't be much of a problem. Hows the job market and the people and stuff?

Least another year or two for my bachelor's, but there's a good chance I'm doing my master's here, if not Austin. But UT in Austin is so damn expensive, so it's a snowball's chance.

Noice. How much is tuition at your place? I looked on the website and I couldn't find jack.

How much more school you got?

Also it's pretty boring to me aside from the timbre. That's exactly what happens when you just stick to one mode...very static harmony and melody. I don't think most people want that.

So given your thoughts on Modal Harmony, what would be your thoughts on stuff like Gamelan music?

Stuff like this if you're not too familiar:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVS2ais8fZE
What I said about modes applies for western tonal harmony. Obviously once you get into ethnic folk music, it's a different story.

But even here I don't hear in terms of modes, just some very recurring idioms.
