“Have you ever heard those lyrics by Nine Inch Nails: ‘I just made you up to hurt myself'?” he continues, laughing. “That's kinda how it is for songwriters I think: you almost create drama in your life just to get some good inspiration! Anything that irks you a little bit, for some weird and unknown reason, is good for really passionate songs. I write a lot of the stuff, but it's like a team – everybody's got their inspiration that they put into it.”
Wesley Scantlin of Puddle of Mudd said that. I find it so true. This has been on my mind for awhile--I deliberately create drama and whatnot for myself to create good inspiration. Of course good inspiration doesn't all come from deliberate action. It could just come to you at the most random moments, or when you're with someone special, or when you're doing something you love.
Inspiration is all around you. Whether it causes you feelings of pain, angst, love, remberence, happyness, regret, joy--whatever. Often times I look for inspiration, but to me, true inspiration comes from not seeking it, but just stumbling upon it on accident--when you're not even looking for it. Sometimes I'll be messing around with the guitar and this beautiful piece comes out, or this angsty riff comes out and I didn't even intend to find it.
But I guess what I'm trying to say here, is that inspiration is everywhere. Whether it's a deliberate attempt, or just stumble on it by chance.
