Anyone that is a bassist, that doesn't play/ isn't into Pop/Pop Rock is good, in particular Cliff Burton, Alex Webster, Tom Araya, Victor Wooten, Jaco Patorius etc.
Favorite books :
Don't usually read that much, but I like stuff about modern war, and I might read Barack Obama's autobiography.
