Being a bassist.

Being that I am a bassist aswell as a guitarist theres the people that say one is easier than the other. As if I switched from one to the other because its easy, that is not the case. Supposebly bass is easier than guitar its really not. Bass gets really complex at times. It gets really complex while playing the basslines to songs like Hysteria from Muse or YYZ from Rush or even Schism from Tool, Schism is a very easy song but its one of the few times that that bass sets the pace for most of the song. Maintaining a steady pace while playing bass is very important. Without the bass you do not have anything in the background or anything in most cases to back up the guitarist. People actually forget that bass exists in a band and gives all credit to the guitarist. A prime example of this is Ramble On from Led Zeppelin, John Paul Jones played a amazing bassline but all credit goes to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. If you listen to Ramble On then you will notice that its pretty much all about the bass yet Jones receives no credit. The point of this blog is to try and help people realize that being a bassist is not always easy. Yes a lot of songs for bass are simple but dont forget that without the bass something is missing from the song. Think of your favorite song and listen for the bass, get to know what the bass sounds like, then imagine what the song would sound like without bass. Without the bass the song completly changes. It changes because the bass lays the foundation to any song. The drums and bass maintain the structure of the song.
So the next time you think bass is easy or not needed please remeber this blog and you will see just how important bass really is.
Thank you.
