As musicians silence is something that we strive to break, but also the hardest part as musicians to play. Most musicians tend to forget the importance of silence, and the impact that it has on the listener. Good musicians are able to utilize silence somehow into a song but true musicians can hear the music when there silence. John Lennon has said that one of his favorite things to do was to lay and bed and listen to the running of pipes, or the crowd on the street, in otherwords; the natural music that the world makes as it turns. There have been great works based on nothing but silence (see 4:33 by John Cage), and many based on breaking the silence. Between the two I must say that in the end I do prefer the silence because in silence you can hear everything. I don't just mean the noise the world makes, but in silence is where all music begins, and where all music lives before it finally breaks it. Anything can be created from silence, all it takes is a little time and a little emotion. Silence can be applied to more than just music. Two people that can sit in complete silence without feeling awkward are sitting in complete harmony. They know that the presence of the other requires no words or noise, but just happy to be together. I've always seen sitting in silence a great test for such things as friendship and love. If you are able to do it then there is something special about your relationship with that person. As musicians we do try to break the silence, but instead of looking at it that way, why not look at it how it really is? Silence is the true champion of music. It is where all music begins, and where all music ends.
