When YouTube gets boring

Luis Rodrigo Bravo Sigüenza

"When YouTube Gets Boring”

One of the first things Internet-fans do when they open their web browser is to get into YouTube. It is just like an instinct. They pour themselves onto the computer, watching videos for hours at a time. Those who everyday enjoy the tons of fun YouTube brings might not remember how Internet entertainment was before it, or may not know what's outside this huge video-sharing portal. I must admit I was a YouTube addict, but once I fell sick in bed and had to spend my days watching hundreds of videos. It turned really frustrating when I did not know what to look for anymore! Fortunately, with a little help from Google search, now it's easy to find different kind of sites in which people can escape for a while from boredom. In this way, someone can spend time learning, discussing, drawing, knowing people, making music and several activities more.

Play, Learn and Feed: FreeRice

Every so often is hard to find on-line activities that combine fun with philanthropic goals. Thanks to my English teacher now I know about site that allows us to mix both of these factors in a pretty admirable way.

This non-profit website is called FreeRice, in which people play to battle against world hunger and at the same time they extend their vocabulary. This is an idea developed by the United Nations in 2007 and supported by numerous sponsors.

The way to play FreeRice is really simple. The main page shows by default the English Grammar subject and the user must chose the correct answer for every question given. The difficulty of these questions changes depending on the level we are playing in, so as player responds correctly, the level increases. If someone wishes to change the level, there’s an option below the “game screen” to do it. When the answer is incorrect, the level is decreased by one point, and the same question is repeated in order to learn it correctly.

There are 13 different subjects included in FreeRice classified in six main areas: Art, Chemistry, English, Geography, Language Learning and Math. Whatever the subject is, the method is the same. Each correct answer means 10 grains of rice donated to poor people. A wrong answer does not reduce the number of grains donated but allows continuing where the count was.

I’m sure people will ask if donating grain by grain is worth the effort. Looking at the numbers, from October 7, 2007 to August 2009, 787,320,460 grains of rice have been donated. According to the Rice Association, one pound of rice contains 29,000 grains. That means 27,145 pounds donated in less than two years. It is an important quantity from this point of view.

Helping others and having fun at the same time is a very noble way to spend time in the Internet. Now, as their slogan say: “Give free rice to hungry people by playing a simple game that increases your knowledge”.

Life through a Vagabond’s Eyes

Life through a Vagabond’s Eyes

The world is full of people who have everything in the palm of their hands, who are usually complaining, and there are people who have almost nothing. But everyday on my way back home after classes, when I was in high school, I used to see one man on Zaragoza Avenue who made me think about how despite a terrible situation you can enjoy and appreciate life.

This man was an aged vagabond often seen wandering in the center of town, carrying a lot of plastic bags. First time I saw him was six months ago; I used to take my friend Anthony to the bus stop in Alameda park, so I had to drive on Zaragoza. It was not a long distance, but it could be terrible because of sun’s heat, as hot as hell we thought, the slow movement of that sea of cars, and the fact that my old Topaz ’92 had no air conditioner. Although it was like a trip into an oven, Anthony had always something funny to say to make it easy.

One day, at the busy Pasteur-Zaragoza’s corner we saw this old man out of a drugstore sitting on an old wooden chair: thin silver threads were growing on his head, with a wrinkled brown skin covered with messed clothes, and it’s color implied that the smog of the city had been covering it for many decades; the injuries of his skeletal hands could have been the result of a severe arthritis combined with the everyday bag-carrying. His little legs made him no taller than five feet. In general, I felt his whole body was not stronger than the glass of the drugstore window behind him. With his eyes focused on his dreams, I was not able to see their color, but even so, I could feel the peacefulness they emitted in that comfortable rest.

With nothing else to see but a red light over the cars and boring rows of cars, we stared at him for a while until the stop light turned green. Yes, that was the first time I saw him; we did not know his name, so Anthony called him “Engineer”, making fun of my professional studies.

Since then I have met him several times in the same area. After a couple of these meetings, I could notice (without having exchanged a single word with him) that he was a friendly person. As he walks down the streets he says hello to quite a few people, and they return the greeting to the smiling wanderer. When he arrives at his usual location, outside the drugstore and he leaves his load (one day I discovered that he had crushed cans inside the bags). The smile never disappears from his face. But what really drew my attention was the fact that he was not a criminal, because it is not surprising that someone without a formal job incurs in robbery or illegal activities to earn “easy money”. I knew this after making a few questions to a friendly butcher who also greeted our man. He said that the vagabond takes all those crushed cans to recycling centers, and gets enough money to buy food. In fact, he enjoys doing it.

I’m convinced that if we could learn to live like “The Engineer” does, always smiling, always in a happy mood and staying away from all that material things, such like money, that make us unable to see how beautiful life is, we would achieve the happiness we’re always looking for in our daily complaining.

How to catch Mew on Red

Current mood: Excited because I've caught Mew

Guess What: I got my Pokémon Red Version for Game Boy, and with a little help from YouTube I caught Mew.

-All you need is

-A Game Boy

-Your Red Version

-A good pair of hands and a Brain

No Game Shark, not moving the SS Anne truck, no complete PokéDex, just do this:

-Get Fly
-DO NOT FIGHT THE YOUNG TRAINER on the way to Bill's house who is facing north, standing directly above a LASS
-DO NOT FIGHT the GAMBLER facing the entrance of the underground tunnel from Lavender to Celadon
-You MAY NOT fight the guy in the grass next to the bridge in Cerulean. Some sites say you must not fight him, but I did, and I caught Mew (:golfclap:).

Then:
-Save the game before you start.
-Fly to Lavender Town and walk West (to Celadon City). A few steps before the entrance, you'll see the Gambler (the one who looks like Voldemort)facing north to a house. Walk to the house, avoiding him of course, till he's offscreen.

-This is the most difficult part: Walk towards him, and, at the moment he appears on-screen, press START and fly to Cerulean City. If you do it right, the ! symbol will appear on his head after you're gone.

<-------------He's the GAMBLER

-Head for the YOUNG TRAINER. NOTE: HE MUST WALK TO YOU

-Defeat his Level-17-Slowpoke.

-Fly back to Lavender Town and walk west again.
-When you're in the narrow path leading west, your START menu will appear. Press B Button.

-Walk and inmediately Mew will appear.

MEW obtained using the MEW GLITCH

He's level 7 and just knows Pound, so use that good-old ULTRA BALL to catch him. I caught him on Sunday, and by this day he's level 52.

Good luck

Russia and Georgia

Current mood: jubilant

Georgia says Russia behind recent attacks

Russian-Georgian relations hit another low point on Monday when Georgia accused the Russian secret services of organizing a car bombing that killed three policemen and wounded 26 others in February.
The 1 February blast took place near a police station in the Georgian town of Gori, close to the separatist republic of South Ossetia, which has enjoyed Russia’s support since it seceded from Georgia in an armed conflict in 1992.
Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili told a news conference on Monday that Colonel Anatoly Sysoev from Russian military intelligence had planned the Gori attack and several other attacks in Georgia in recent months.
Merabishvili said two ethnic Ossetian suspects had been arrested in South Ossetia and had confessed to setting off the bomb in Gori and of being members of Sysoev’s group. Georgian television on Monday showed the confessions of the two suspects, Georgy Valiyev and Georgy Dzaseyev.
The interior minister did not say what would have motivated Russia to organize attacks in Georgia, but shortly after the blast Georgian officials suggested that the attack was aimed to derail peace talks with South Ossetia.
According to Merabishvili, another group of around 20 saboteurs armed with portable surface-to-air Igla missiles were hiding out in the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali.
Givi Targamadze, the head of Georgia’s parliamentary national security and defense committee, upped the ante on Monday, publicly claiming that up to 120 Russian military intelligence agents were conducting acts of sabotage on Georgian territory.
“Russia is taking a direct part in an internal conflict in Georgia,” the Associated Press quoted him as saying.
Merabishvili said he had summoned the Russian ambassador, Vladimir Chkhikvishvili, and had handed him an extradition request for five members of “Sysoyev’s sabotage group”.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Monday denying any link to the Gori attack and warning Georgia that “such insinuations do not serve the normalization of the situation in South Ossetia, just as they do not serve the further development of Russian-Georgian relations.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry also denied that those listed on Georgia’s extradition request served in any official government capacity.
“There is no such man with the family name of Sysoyev in the GRU [Russian military intelligence],” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Vyacheslav Sedov told Regnum news agency on Tuesday. “We have already got accustomed that [Georgian officials] make mountains out of molehills, but there is not even a molehill here.”
Citing an unnamed source in the Russian Defense Ministry's human resources unit, Russia’s Kommersant daily newspaper reported on Tuesday that there no colonel’s by the name of Anatoly Sysoyev had been in the ministry’s files since 1992.
Eduard Kotaev, head of the office of South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity, told Kommersant that Colonel Sysoyev had worked as Kokoity’s economic consultant but had left South Ossetia for Russia in December 2004.
According to Kotaev, the two ethnic Ossetian suspects had been detained by Georgian police while they were unconscious after a road accident and were then forced to confess to the Gori bombing.
“We know well how they beat out confessions from Ossetians, along with their teeth,” he was quoted as saying.
The speaker of South Ossetia’s parliament, Znaur Gassiyev, denied on Tuesday Merabishvili’s claim that Tskhinvali was harboring Igla-armed guerillas, Interfax news agency reported.

Rational strategy?
Tbilisi’s latest escalation of anti-Russian rhetoric is a rational strategy that has already proved effective in pressing Russia for serious concessions in Georgia, Nikolai Petrov, a political analyst with the Moscow Carnegie Center, told ISN Security Watch on Tuesday.
He said such scandals were a good way to “force Russia to decrease its activities in Georgia’s breakaway republics.”
Petrov specifically referred to Tbilisi’s recent success in forcing Russia to agree to give up its military bases in Georgia - a development that coincided with Georgian accusations of Russian involvement in organized crime in Georgia.
Relations between Russia and Georgia have been sour since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Tbilisi lashed out at Moscow for its support for Georgia’s separatist provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, while Moscow accused Georgia of harboring Chechen rebels and allowing foreign mercenaries to cross its border into Chechnya.
Relations further deteriorated following the “Rose Revolution”, which set the stage for the pro-Western Mikhail Saakashvili to replace veteran Soviet leader Eduard Shevardnadze as Georgia’s president. Saakashvili has caused a further straining of ties with Moscow by forging close relations with the US and stepping ups efforts to bring Georgia’s separatist provinces under Tbilisi's control

New Adventure - Build a guitar

Current mood: contemplative

Yes, my Washburn is dead (actually, I killed it). I want to set the neck and bridge on a new body. I have a few ideas: a trash can, maybe some car pieces....

If I get through this, I'll show you the guitar.

I need good luck
