You were also right about supplements although some can make things easier such as:
Protein supps, BCAAs, Creatine and NO2(with caffeine). Not necessary but they can help.

Actually I was referring to the book titled "Starting Strength" http://www.startingstrength.com/ . Seriously the BEST weight training book in existence. It utilizes the principle barbell lifts (back squats, dead lifts, cleans, bench press and military press) and over a period of 6-12 months you will see amazing results in terms of strength and size. How old are you btw?
