Born and raised around Washington, D.C., I'm 64 and now live in Las Vegas, NV. I like to transcribe songs for the guitar as a hobby. I played the drums in the sixties and am now retired. Now I play golf..for what it's worth.
A number of years ago I bought the two volume set of the complete Beatles and found that most of it appeared to be written for the piano. In any event, the chords sometimes did not fit the song for the guitar the way I would have played it, in my opinion. Let me say that, as has been said many times that “opinions are like you know what, and everybody has one”…and so do I. So I started to rewrite a number of the Beatles songs that fit the way I played guitar. One thing led to another and I started rewriting songs from the 50s and 60s, and others. I’d check out the song on You Tube and check the internet to see what else had been written about that song. Sometimes the chords were completely right…again in my opinion…and then sometimes they were a bit off or….perhaps just missing a few things. Sometimes the lyrics were a bit off…or the whole song was not transposed. Sometimes the formatting was a bit off…i.e., the proper chords had gotten skewed and were not over the proper words. Sometimes the songs had not been transcribed at all…at least I could not find them. So I would download the lyrics and then listen to each song….line by line to check if the lyrics were correct. Then I’d transcribe the song….some times just by ear, and sometimes using what had already been written. The late Andrew Rodgers is, perhaps, the best known of the 60s song transcribers. There are many others. I’ve tried to offer, where possible, some alternate ways to play, i.e, using capo settings that might make some songs easier to play. There are some chords that don’t rock my boat, i.e, Eb or C# or Bsus4 so I try to find ways around those. Hopefully, I’ve gotten most of the songs right…but I suspect I’ve made a number of mistakes. My ear is not what it used to be…and, after all, it’s just educated guessing. Only the original artist knows for sure. The goal here is to make these tabs as close to the original song as possible, so "constructive" ideas on better chords are very much appreciated. For example; if someone feels that...say.. a G would sound better then a Em....I'd like to know and try it out. If something sounds better I'll be happy to make the change (s), that way, everyone wins.
